CHANGE IN ATTITUDE NEEDED.

Today International Women's Day is being celebrated all over the world. There will be marches, grand speeches, etc. etc. Yes indeed, women have made great strides over the centuries, but there is one thing which seems to be going nowhere - and that is the scourge of domestic violence. From a small house in a ghetto to a mansion in an upscale neighborhood, violence leveled against women can be found - and there is no end in sight. In fact, here in the Caribbean, it seems to be on the increase , and according to the World Health Organization - one in three women throughout the world , will experience physical and /or sexual violence by a partner. The theme for this year's International Day is "Be Bold For Change" , and in my view - a major change is needed in the way some men perceive women if we are to even begin to stem the tide of violence against women. What are your thoughts?.

I think you are right but I don't know how we stop this dreadful behaviour.

@Kandae11 That's for sure and what worries me is that many men keep their attitudes well hidden, whether it regards race, gender tendencies or beating your wife. The clever ones keep their true thoughts to themselves or only reveal it among their own circle of friends.

@WriterAI They know the police and court is there -- hasn't helped that much. If they want to let off steam why not go fight other men.

@Kandae11 oh so sorry... i typed that wrong. I meant - "not only men, but the attitude of all the women towards other women should also change!" Hiw many times have a seen cases where women help men in ruining othey women's lives.

Without a doubt domestic violence needs to stop but it is one of those things that is hard to control, violent men live everywhere in the world.

@Kandae11 Most likely they don't know any better, probably raised in an abusive home, it is a vicious cycle.

Those who beat women are cowards. Why not pick a fight with a man instead - or better yet - buy a punching bag to let off steam.

There is no answer to that. Men need to change, but they have to want to change. Abusive behavior stems in anger.

Well, in the Philippines, the Top 10 PMA military graduates has 8 women and only 2 men. That is not at all an unequality for the women. I think, more women are also employed in the business establishments than men.

I am happy because here in the Philippines, women as well as children are now protected by the BantayBata. And there is an organization called Gabriella (the brave heroine of the Philippines, who fought those who like to conquest the Philippines in the olden time.

@Kandae11 It is an organization that protects the kids and women. It's where reports or complaints about abuse for women and children is being done.

@SIMPLYD here are similar organizations in my country, but I don't think the women use them often enough. They tend to wait for the abuser to change - then it is too late.

I wonder if superheroes ever did anything about domestic violence. Maybe that's the next crime comic-book movies have to fight ... was there ever a 'popular crime' superheroes fought against, or were they more 'against crimes in general'? https://coveringkaty.com/2016/10/22/superheroes-help-raise-awareness-for-domestic-violence-in-katy/

@Kandae11 Should it be a well-known superhero, or should there be a new superhero who rises up against it?

There are things we can be thankful for, but there are many negative things still happening to women which should be addressed.

That is definitely an area which has to bring in changes. A one day celebration is not the answer. I attended two celebrations yesterday...diverse groups. And that was they message that most made in their speeches. The change has to be in the mind of the men , how the think about women. Its sad but today a whatsapp message is making the rounds showing a man dragging a women to the kitchen saying"womens' day is over"

That is why I said we won't get anywhere unless men change their thinking. Years ago messages like that were sent to women - no whatsapp in those days, -- but there are always hecklers at the marches and some sound quite serious.

Women are usually ashamed to talk about domestic abuse and that is one of the reasons why nothing much has been done about it.

I believe woman should be able to financially support themselves. Some woman stop working after getting married and I think that's a bad choice. I also woman need to voice and defend themselves if they're being abuse. If they didn't stand up for themselves, they will never change.

Of course I agree, and there needs to be more respect for everyone as women are not always the victims. But I'm going to play devil's advocate here; do you think women too need to change their attitude and make sure that they do not allow men to take control of their lives, as sometimes happens? Make sure that they do not let them get away with little things, thinking 'Oh he didn't really mean it, it was just the drink' or whatever until the situation escalates? And also, dare I say it, behave as an equal if you want to be treated as an equal.

Be bold for change. I love it. There should really be equality. What a man can do there is a woman who can also. Gone are the days when only men work an women are stay-in's in the house.
