Taboo Topics

Why are we keeping taboo subjects quiet ?! Why not discuss and openly talk about things such as; sexual assault, domestic violence, incest, abortion etc. Let's not keep things in the closet, it makes those who have experienced it feel shame for it having happened to them. If we start openly discussing those events they become more well known, more in the light for others to see and be on the look out for. Someone who has never had any involvement in an abusive situation but has a friend or co-worker that has and the inexperienced person hears another person discussing it can be helpful later or to someone else. Maybe that inexperienced friend or co-worker later is involved in a relationship or situation where they are being abused. Knowing the signs and what to look for by hearing about an experience of another could very well start to prevent a person from being abused or taken advantage of. Talking about a taboo topic would also give power to those victims, instead of bringing them shame for it having occurred. Let's start being more open about taboo topics and bring them into light and erase their shame. Share your experiences with others, the more you know about something the more you are likely to be on the look out for it happening to you or someone else. Taboo things are happening to everyone, everyday there is no shame it. Don't be a victim, be the power to stop it from happening to another !

I agree! Sometimes, though, the victim has to start the healing process before they are ready to talk about their experiences to other people.

Oh absolutely take the time to heal on your own...but then start talking. I suppose some people won't be of this mind and feel that it is private and that's okay. There are plenty of others out there who am of the mind that I am and are ready to talk about it ! : ) Thanks for commenting - this is a big topic in my mind.

The topics you mentioned are not taboo here. They have been written, discussed and appreciated. Besides that, there is no push for actual victims to share their personal stories unless they want to and/or they are ready to.
