Mumsy celebrates a birthday today which requires a whopping amount of candles on a {currently non-existent} birthday cake.
She is seventy-five.
But she's not really seventy-five, not in my head. In my head she's ageless, and she's every age. Because she's simply my Mum.
She's been every sort of Mum she could be. Patient, kind, loving, tolerant, forgiving, understanding, beautiful, fascinating, funny, worried, angry, hopeful, silly, tearful, quirky ... She raised four children practically single-handed following a messy divorce, four children who entered teenagehood with their own messy heads and who, between them all, managed to create more than a decade full of pain ... runaways, overdoses, fights, school issues, so much anger. Those children are now adults, and despite still having our daemons we are all amazing and successful in our own ways.
My Mummy did that. My brave, strong, independent, bursting with unconditional love Mummy, dragged us all into adulthood, kicking and screaming, and when she was satisfied that we could survive, she let us fly. And boy, did we fly, always safe in the knowledge that she is there when we need her.
The older she gets, the more I worry. But this is natural, and perhaps my worry is pure selfishness; one day she won't be here and I won't be able to do the one thing which makes me feel truly safe and secure anymore ... feel her arms around me.
Still, not that I need to worry. She's the most technological-savvy, sociable and popular seventy-five year old I know! Honestly, that woman has to check her diary to see when she can fit me in to her busy schedule. And I shan't see her this weekend because she's off on a jolly with her church!
Happy Birthday, Mumsy!

@poppylicious What monarch, celebrity or politician could achieve all that, and yet they all get paid more than humble mummies.

I often think it must be the hardest, most unrewarding {and yet most rewarding} job in the world. Maybe I've not been blessed with babies because I wouldn't have the strength and patience required to raise children.

She does, although she will admit that she tires so much more easily now. She and her friends are always off on weekends away and days out. She still does voluntary admin work two mornings a week, helps with Messy Church and a coffee morning, runs a weekly prayer group from home and goes to WI. Of course, she still does things that Grannies should do, like knit. But only when she has time!

Thanks! It really is no age at all now. And she doesn't have to pay her telly licence anymore ... that's an achievement worth celebrating!

@Poppylicious What a lovely little girl, this is a pretty old photo, well only 9 years older than my young years photos.

I'm hoping my Mummy will live to a very old age. She has good genes. The little girl in the photo is Mum, and the lady is my Nana. :)

@Poppylicious Both of my own parents were the same way! I could not believe the patience they had with my brother and I, especially since we were always getting into trouble! But, thankfully, that patience has rubbed off on my as I raise my own two children!

I love this post. Every mum should have kids who appreciate her the way you obviously appreciate yours.

Apparently she and her old cronies had breakfast at Toby Carvery followed by tea and cake at the seaside!

Happy Birthday to your mom!
It's very good to hear she is sitll very much active and apparently happy in her life.
We often don't think of all the things we've done as children that make our parents ever worried about us.
I think I was the most tame of my sibilings though!

@Poppylicious I still maintain I was the most tame!
My mom passed away several years ago, though. My dad hasn't been in my life (in any real sense) in 15 years.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Awww, sorry. I didn't realise about your mum. I feel very blessed to still have my Mummy around. I dread the day she isn't here anymore.

Even in adulthood we must do things that cause them worry! Perhaps more so, than as children. :)

A few years ago her church gave Husband and I a few hundred pounds to help us out when we had the kidney transplant shortly after I'd been made redundant. I wrote a letter to say thank you and I think I said more than what I've put here about how it wouldn't have been possible without her support and the way she raised us with such unconditional love and forgiveness. So, yep, she knows and has seen it!

I've worried about her since childhood, for various reasons. I'm just a worrypot.
