If you're a tiny island in the middle of a churning sea, in a gale, bits of you are going to suffer. So it came to pass, on March 8th, that the world-famous Azure Window, locally known by the Gozitans as "it-tieqa tad-Dwejra", succumbed to the pounding surf and collapsed beneath the foaming brine. Here's what this landmark looked like on video, as featured in many a wedding photo as well as on HBO's "Game of Thrones", courtesy of YouTube™ (below). The picture above shows how the same bit of the coastline of Gozo, the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, appears today.
Azure Window collapsed on the 8th of March! Its really sad that this beautiful landmarks does not exist anymore. this is a small tribute to that place as we ...

We heard about this on the news. Such a shame. Along the south coast of Australia we have the '12 apostles', a series of limestone stacks off the Port Campbell National Park beach. There are now 8 after the 9th collapsed in 2005.

I skipped this outing when it was scheduled as per plan. We were very tired after our previous day trip to Philips Island to watch the Penguins' March.

@JudyEv Being in Australia you have still not seen it (lol) That reminds me of my nephew who is in the States. I was on that US tour when he told me that he had not seen half of what i had seen being in the US for well over 25 years. (lol) Penguin March is worth your time.

Things don't always stay the same. Many enjoyed the beauty of the place while it was here. All things eventually fall or change in some way. It is sad, though.

Silly as it may sound just a couple of days ago I promised my friend to take her for snacks to my favourite place. I had not been there in years. I was shocked to see that building had disappeared and we were directed to another place. I did not like that place at all.

@pgntwo That must have been devastating for you. Was your house sold off?

@allknowing The house I grew up in was handed back to the owner when the lease was up... Then it became a bar/restaurant. After that, it went downhill. Last time I was there, it was bricked-up and abandoned.

Time changes many things. The house I lived in as a child was all but a ruin the last time I visited, some 30years later.

@pgntwo I suppose so too, I wonder if they ever thought of reinforcing it while it was still up at least from money coming from tourists visits, now it gone forever

@louievill It will make even more of an attraction now, as divers and others interested in marine life study how the submerged debris are reintegrated into the seabed, I suspect.

Its destruction by the elements was a foregone conclusion, I suppose.

I have read that the arc has collapsed, thanks to the many tourists that jumped on it I suppose.

Not just the bridge, but the complete stack has gone too.
After I did the edit with the red graphic, I realised I can do a true transition of the two videos as they where shot almost from the same angle. To use this...

@LadyDuck Nature, by its nature, cannot be protected from itself. Mother Nature is a harsh mistress.

This was a pity, luckily there are photos and footage of it. It just shows that Mother Nature changes the face of the earth as she sees fit @pgntwo .

I've been to Gozo several times and always thought the Azure Window was a bit of a lame attraction. As a geologist by training, I just accept that erosion happens, rocks fall down, that's to be expected. I don't suppose if it wasn't associated with Game of Thrones (which I've never seen) that anybody would be particularly fussed about it.

I much prefer the Blue Grotto, on the south coast of Malta, @boiboing. Globigerina limestone is not renowned for its ability to withstand saltwater erosion, so it was inevitable.

I love the idea that the sea just takes what it wants without worrying if we care or not!

No-one would be out on the archway in weather as stormy as it was on 08-Mar-2017, besides which access to the area was restricted due to the presence of fracture lines spanning the width of the archway itself.

its looking marvelous but sad to know the news

For a year or so, more people will visit, just to see where it once stood...
