Further Thoughts On Keys

Having run a thread on how many keys we have to carry around, here are a few other thoughts on keys. Where do you keep them when not in use? While you are out with them they presumably reside in pockets, purses, bags, etc. While at home people leave them bedside, in a jar by the door, in their coat pockets, etc. I keep my front door key in the lock of the door itself. That way a/. I know where it is and can’t forget to take it out with me b/. In the event of a fire or other need to evacuate I can get the door unlocked immediately c/. No one can peep in through the keyhole (unlikely anyway) d/. No one can use a key to unlock my door from outside as my key engages the lock. I never understood the 18th and 21st birthday tradition of handing a giant key to someone as a present especially as the key fits no locks at all. The keys to the city awards for outstanding citizens are also useless if they don’t open bank locks or pub doors. My landlord, in another city, has the only spare key to my flat – I don’t know neighbours well enough to leave any with a spare as yet and there is nowhere safe just outside to stash a spare key for if I get locked out. Actually I have to lock my door to go out – it won’t just click shut and lock automatically, which is a great deterrent to accidentally leaving home without my keys. Arthur Chappell

I heard keeping the door key in the door and that is a good idea. I do not have to type of door that I can do it. I left my keys on the side of the door once where you open it and a neighbor of my knocked on my door to let me know. Now, I put them away in a safe place and know where they are and check that I put them there when go to bed now.

@arthurchappell Thanks Arthur and I try, but, I still lose things and have to search all over for them and my keys as well, especially when I need to go out.

I do the same, I leave the key in the door, it's the safer place where to leave it. I have two other sets of key, one is always in the pockets of my husband and the other in my purse.

I also leave the keys in the door. I guess some people worry that somebody could put their hand through the letterbox and grab them.

I try only to carry the keys I absolutley need. I have different key rings as I keep my bicycle keys on a heavy one as there are several hefty keys

@Ronrybs it is a good idea not to carry round un-needed keys as you could lose them before you do need them again

I have two sets of keys. One is a complete set which I always carry with me and the other is just the front and rear door keys, which I keep in the kitchen.

We have a key stashed outside but that is easy for us. It's good that you can't lock up without taking your key.

I always wondered about that - key to the city bit - seems rather foolish to me. I always put my door key in the same spot every night before I retire.

I do the same thing with my front door keys. When I am not using my other keys I keep them in a bowl in the hall. I am also confused about the whole key for 18th and 21st birthdays, but I do know why people are given the key to the city. This comes from a time when city gates were locked at night and only certain people were able to leave or entry after a set time. By giving someone a key to the city, you were giving them access when the gates were closed.

@thewaher if only they still did that, I would let a few people out of the city and then change the locks
