Bad news - my husband has two things that are smaller than normal

United States

My husband had a doctor's appointment on Tuesday. I always go with him, partly due to the fact he doesn't hear all that well. So, you can imagine how he must have felt when the doctor told him that two of his 'parts' are not normal size and, in fact, are smaller than then should be. Not only that, but they are two different sizes. Yes, according to the ultrasound report his nephrologist told him that his kidney's are smaller than expected for a man his size. One is a little larger than the other. But other than that he has no tumors, no blockage and no kidney stones. The ultrasound and blood work are all part of what the nephrologist needs to try to determine why his kidneys are not filtering as well as they should. His number went up a little since his last appointment a month ago, so some good news there. Now we both have the same problem and see the same specialist - that's togetherness! Photo from Pixabay

As long as the number goes up all is ok...we know what would happen if it drops too far down

Having small kidneys does not seem as devastating as your title inferred.

@AbbyGreenhill I know that I would prefer to be told that my kidneys were small.

That was the idea LOL! If I can't get a few laughs out of his small parts what's left!

They can be smaller now exactly because they are a bit damaged because of a faulty drainage system. This should also cause higher than normal blood pressure. I hope the nephrologist can find the reason.

@AbbyGreenhill High BP is source of many problems, we both have low BP, I only smoked a couple of years when I was young, my husband never smoked. I hope you do not need dialysis.

It's high bp that causes the problems. His is under control with meds. Age plays a role in them not functioning well - also we are both former smokers and that's another cause. They don't know the answers but we have to go there so that if the numbers get too low that means dialysis.

I know your husband is in his 60's I am assuming, so apparently the smaller than normal kidneys are ok as he has had them all his life. I do hope they keep functioning properly.

He wishes he was 60is he is 74 - they are not functioning properly or he wouldn't be going to a nephrologist!!! Low-Normal number is above 60 his number is in the 40's, mine is in the 50's.

@AbbyGreenhill I see, I didn't understand I thought they were just small, not that they were not functioning properly. Well shucks hopefully something can be done about that.

@fishtiger58 One thing we both did to get our numbers up was to stop taking calcium. That's wo't change tghe size of his kidneys, but the doc said size isn't all that important.

Poor guy. I wonder how uncommon that is. I read a story about a woman who came into the hospital and discovered she had only one kidney.

I hope that they can figure out what the problem is

They will never know and that was stated by the doc. There are many causes - age, former smoker, high bp, overweight. Kidney function decreases in everyone as they age.

You lead us down the wrong path with your title Abby hope his numbers keep going up and his kidneys filter better.

Neither of us will ever have 'normal numbers but as long as they don't go lower we'll be fine.

I suppose that is okay since they haven't posed a problem thus far.

He has no problems, - neither of us do - we would not know there was an issue except we get blood work done every six months.
