Spring Cleaning & De-Junking

I suddenly have the urge to not just clean my home but also to get rid of so many items I've had for years and years. It seems to have just hit me that all we have is the here and now and I feel weighed down by 'stuff'. I have things like stuffed toys I've had since I was a child and I'm almost 40 now! It suddenly seems silly to have kept things like this. I'm currently donating to charity shops and selling things on Ebay but I was warned by my sister not to be so hasty in getting rid of 'memories'. However I feel like I want to make new memories and live in the moment. Can anyone relate?

I got rid of a lot of stuff when we moved. I want to just live in the moment to.

I like to look at old photos, living in the present can make us forget the past and that is sad. Our past experiences have made us the people we have become.

Certainly I can relate. I am 70 and still have so much stuff from when I was younger. I would just go a bit carefully and if you're doubtful at all about throwing something out then you might want to keep it a while longer - just in case you regret your decision to chuck it. It is certainly very freeing to get rid of things you no longer want.

I gave away lots of things when I left England to come to Greece. I regretted it in a way, but it was impractical to bring it with me.

@redurnet And maybe take photos of some of the items if you think that is a good idea.

Thanks, it does feel like I'm unloading a burden but I remember when I was a teenager I found all of my toys from childhood in my parent's garage and I was so happy to see them again. They brought back so many memories so I will think carefully about what I am throwing away now.

Yes, I can relate to that... But with having a family and all, it is not always easy to just toss out 'memories'...

True, we get attached to things and just looking at some things can definitely bring back good memories.

@redurnet My youngest is 18 and sometimes he or his older brothers still ask about stuff from when they were toddlers... We enjoy looking back to those memories from years ago and places we've been to in the past...

Your sister has a point and those memories may be too special to part with. However some of it may be taking up too much space. Other members of the family may like to have them at least then you would see them sometimes.

Spring does have that result. It's time for me to start thinning things out again. Next fall we will be moving house...that means a major thin out.

I am always trying to decrease the amount of stuff I have. It is hard to choose just a couple items as keepsakes.

@redurnet The other day, I had a top in the give away bag and I took it back out and hung it in my closet!

@paigea That's really funny, I did the same thing with a handbag the other day!

It sure is, I keep changing my mind just as I'm about to get rid of something.

I'm more of like your sister. Holding on to memories. Clinging on to the old black and white tv despite its malfunction.
