They Didn't Realise The Authors Were Dead.

I belong to a poetry site - it's not an earning site, but we can comment on each others' poems. Famous classic poems are sometimes included in the poetry lists, just for us to read. Sometimes people don't recognise them as such, even though they are clearly labelled, and the resulting comments can be hilarious.
Here are a few examples - bear in mind that all these famous poets are long dead.
1. Shakespeare (1564-1616).
Comment "Clever piece - I've missed your writings. Stop by to say hi when you are around." Another comment: "Your grammar's a bit off and it's a bit hard to read, but it's still fairly good".
2. John Donne (1576-1631).
Comment "Keep writing - not many can write Old English like you can. Let's hope that Death doesn't get us any time soon eh?" (The poem was called 'Death Be Not Proud')
3. John Keats (1795-1821).
Comment "I hope you produce more like this and that your pen never runs out of ink. You should think about getting published - seriously."
4. Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837)
Comment "Are you, like, on Facebook or Tweeter or Instagram? And please have some respect and respond, I need those freaking hearts!"
* Note - with regard to number 4 - we can rate each others' comments via a system of hearts.
Btw, the commenters were all different people.
Here's a little ditty I wrote about all this:
Have their brains so far from them fled
that they don't realise what they've read?
I've laughed till I cried
when they haven't spied
that the writer is already dead.
"Keep writing" they say with good cheer
(and this to a guy called Shakespeare!)
At a classic they look
"Are you on Facebook?"
Perhaps they have had had too much beer!

that is very funny. It shows how oblivious people are.

@Morleyhunt I've had a lot of fun trawling through the comments on those poems - I am amazed how often this sort of thing occurs. Personally I don't see the point in commenting on the classic poems, but I do like to read them.

@Morleyhunt they really do not know these famous writers that remain alive until this time, their legacy.

@jaboUK Are the 'commenters' really rude? On one of Vince's photo sites, they are really vicious. He has just about stopped putting photos up. He doesn't mind for himself so much as he is learning from it and his photos aren't TOO bad to start with but if someone puts up a somewhat ordinary photo they just about crucify the photographer. Who needs it? But still, it is difficult to come up with a good excuse for not knowing Shakespeare.

@jaboUK Dealing with rude people is the reason I'm not on FB although I know you can just join groups or use it to keep in touch with family, etc. It's nice to have a group of like-minded people and in your case it gives people somewhere to put their poems - so it's all good.

Oh my!!
Perhaps they are not looking at the author name at all? You would think that they would recognize them otherwise!
Are these poems not set off in a category all their own?

@ScribbledAdNauseum There is a special section for the classic poetry, but the occasional one is put into the normal lists. It clearly says that they are famous poems and who the author is, and if you miss that it says in the comment box "Comment on this classic poem". So there's no excuse really. They just don't bother to read properly, and comment in the hope that the authors will come and comment on their own poems.

@BelleStarr Yes, it's surprising that these people didn't recognise them, especially on a poetry site. People on that site all aspire to be poets themselves

That is pretty funny, Janet. Perhaps they enjoy their own poetry but have never read anyone else's? Or they weren't very good when they took their English courses or whatever, but that's pretty sad, especially the one about Shakespeare. I can't imagine someone not realizing he's long gone.

@MarshaMusselman I think it's more that they haven't realised that these poets wrote them, rather than not having heard of them. But your first point could be right - they are more interested in their own stuff than anyone else's. It happens on here too, doesn't it?

Ohhhh my gosh! I can hardly believe that people don't recognize these. Were they English? Surely not. Both Anne and I got a good laugh with this one. Your response is priceless.

@jaboUK LOL! The comment on Shakespeare's grammar and style I would have loved to see his face if he was alive on reading that one.
LMAO! And Pushkin's reaction to facebook, tweeter or Instagram. I don't know the guy but I am sure their reaction must be hilarious too.

That is funny - apparently the bank that occupies the real 221b Baker Street in London often gets mail addressed to Sherlock Holmes who was of course never real in the first place

@fishtiger58 Even if they didn't recognise the poets, they are guilty of not reading properly as it clearly says who the author is, and then again in the comment section it says 'comment on this classic poem'. Glad you thought it funny
