My Boy is Sick. I'm very Worried

My cat Boy is very sick right now. He has been sick on and off all his life with Chronic upper respiratory infections and in he almost 9 years of life he has been on antibiotics often. it started off as periodic throughout the year when he was young. then we were at about every 3 months. Now it is basically constant. he can be on them for over a month straight and looking pretty good.. no runny nose. and then when we stop it only takes a few days and his nose is draining like you wouldn't believe. A couple years ago we added anti-virals into the mix and that helped tremendously. Now he has to take both or he gets no effect from plain antibiotics. We have tried almost all antibiotics out there and there isn't much choice left. He has probably built up an immunity to most of them. This weekend I noticed he didn't come to the food dish - at all. I feed them all about 3 or 4 times a day, because one other has bad teeth and she needs canned food and there are 15 of them so they eat at all different times. But Boy didn't come to eat. And he Almost always comes to the dish at least a couple times a day. I felt him yesterday. he felt a little warm but tonight he felt very warm. I had to go to work (which is where I am now) But I gave him his antibiotic, his antiviral and some colloidal silver water. I hope he looks improved in the morning. I have to figure out how to get him eating and drinking again, or this could be the end. Could use some prayers, and any advice from other cat peeps like @ElicBxn

It sounds like you've done all you can do. I would say that taking him to the vet is about your only recourse if he isn't doing better tonight to tomorrow. I understand that taking off to take him to the vet is hard and that you might need an appointment so you might want to call them today and see what they advise. My Taj has some kind of sinus infection that he's had for a long time, makes him sneeze, but otherwise he's fine. That's about my best advice - wish I had more to give.

@minx267 Glad to hear that he's improved some. Still, keep an eye on him because while 9 isn't old, he is considered by vets as geriatric.

Thanks. Keeping a close eye on him. Seems to have joined the land of the living for a short time now. After 24 hours of sleeping in the same spot And mama giving him colloidal silver water, antibiotics and a slurry mix of yogurt, baby food and nitro-cal which he loved.. He just finished his 2nd of the day. He got up and used the potty. I go to work in 2 1/2 hours so will be giving him more food the if he wants it...

@ridingbet He goes to the vet often and is always on meds. I did not go for this particular reason as of yet. I am waiting to see if he gets better / stronger on his own.. He is eating now ... the mix i made for him of yogurt, baby food. a little cat food and Nutrical(a paste with vitamins) so hopefully tomorrow will find him much stronger. If he is not looking better in a day or two I will go the vet again with him.

He's definitely old and that condition is part of his aging process. I hope he gets his medications, he's not a young little tiger anymore.

I'd like to respond to this discussion so that readers can be aware of how to avoid your boy's condition, and to say I'm glad he's made it through again! Folks, one of the reasons why Boy is on antivirals is due to a disease called "Feline Calcivirus". Read up on it in the link for the vaccine that I have provided at the bottom of this reply. I want everyone to know about this, because it's entirely avoidable. Yes, I am telling the truth - this mean, annoying, and eventually deadly virus can be stopped in its tracks simply by getting your kittens vaccinated when you take them in for their 6 week checkup. The vaccine can be combined with the other standard vaccinations, and repeated during a cat's life when you bring them in for their yearly or even later in two-year checkups. Unlike humans, who can catch a cold and weather it off in just a week with no ill-effects, cats have a very different outcome. Their version of the cold virus results in a lifelong battle against respiratory disease. Even though it seems like the snot and sniffles are gone for good when they "get over it", in actuality, the virus just goes dormant, often hiding out in their bones. Once their antibiotic treatments are over, and the antivirals ceased, the virus sneaks up and attacks again. Cats can only stand so many rounds of sickness and medication. Their little livers and kidneys are often overcome by the meds, and finally they either pass from respiratory problems or kidney and liver failure. Households with large colonies, and by that I mean multiple cats - often have the evil lurking in their homes. No matter how much cleaning you do, you may never completely eradicate it. That means that when a new round of kittens is brought into the world, they will eventually catch it. There's almost nothing you can do, EXCEPT GETTING ALL YOUR ANIMALS VACCINATED AGAINST IT. Just a $50 visit to a local animal hospital or vet will save your cat's life. Please do it today or tomorrow. Wouldn't you rather not buy all that medicine, wouldn't you rather have your beautiful kitty for the rest of their natural life? Please take the time to call your vet and get your cat or kitten treated before you end up digging a hole in the backyard and crying for months. I learned this the hard way, and you don't have to. I love you all, and your kitties, too. Please take this one step to securing your future. Thanks.
