There are so many gestures that we do and cannot explain how it was started. This gesture might appropriate or not to some countries. It does exist. It shows how a person is caring or loving to the people close to them.
I am not sure if you noticed that some mothers peck on the check of their friends. It was like unusual to some. This kind of gesture passed on through the years gone by and the children will do the same thing when growing up. Mothers have so many ways to show their loving gesture, a peck on the cheek to their children is the common one.
Do you have unusual gestures that are not common to other countries?

i did the 'beso-beso' thing to my former students now graduates and soon to be licensure passers this November. doing the pecking started about a decade ago; hence, the beso beso.
i think this gesture should not be taken seriously. it should be construed like shaking hands.

@ridingbet In a Muslim country that I had rendered my professional service, men love to hold same gender's hand while walking. I am not comfortable but it made me laugh inside out.lol

@ridingbet If part of our culture, then no reason why disallow ourselves to the same act.

@sabtraversa I have the same opinion, but it is a common practice in the United States. I cannot believe it.

Your post reminds me of my son, who wanted to know why I sniff him instead of kiss him... I wasn't aware of that until he questioned me...
