I remembered to get a cake

I've posted here a photo of Vince's birthday cake. I forgot to have them put 70 on it anywhere. We always had a birthday cake for the boys and would often forget for our own birthdays. We'd have a nice meal or whatever but often forgot about having a cake. This time I bought one from our local bakery. I went to town on my own on 'secret women's business' as usually Vince goes with me. We put seven candles on it, one for each decade. I said I didn't put '70' on it as, if it didn't all get eaten, we'd keep it for his next birthday. It was a sponge with jam and cream and the twenty of us made a good dent in it. There are just enough leftovers to keep me happy for a day or two. Do you put a lot of importance on having a birthday cake?

I was pretty impressed with it. There is no way I could concoct something like that.

That's a great cake. Happy 70th to your husband. Not really, since I'm too old for birthday cakes nowadays.

You're never too old for a cake, although I seldom get one either!

Thanks for the good wishes. I agree with @1creekgirl. You're never too old for cake but it seems to take a back seat as we get older.

@JudyEv You're welcome. Maybe a birthday cupcake would be more like it. I usually have a birthday dinner with my brother (and SIL) and my cousin every Memorial Day weekend.

This is a very nice birthday cake and I am sure it is so delicious. I can understand we often forget our own birthdays but we always remember our children's birthdays

We don't forget our birthdays but we don't worry about having a cake so much anymore. There is just enough cake left for a slice each!

One was on insulin injections but hopefully she was able to eat other things and didn't have too much cake. It was certainly loaded with sugar.

We usually have dinner out, or something special at home, but no cake. I like cakes with no icing best, like apple cake.

@JamesHxstatic It was thanks. Maybe even our last big hurrah. I can imagine any further ones being a bit smaller.

We don't usually bother but at a 'party' it is sort of expected. Everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' and he blew out the candles so that was good.

We don't bring cakes on our birthdays. We buy sweets from the sweet shops. Bengali sweets are superbly made. We also cook rice pudding. Convey my wishes to Vince. I'd have loved to get a piece of his birthday cake.

Thanks for your good wishes. Birthdays are special occasions aren't they? I love rice pudding but rarely have it now.

That's a lovely cake. It looks delicious as well. I don't put that much importance on a birthday cake truth be told.

We never have either but when we've had guests they always sort of expect one so that's the main reason I bought one - so as not to disappoint them.

when we were growing up, yes, my parents always bought a rectangular birthday cake with dedication and candles. it was a sponge cake with vanilla icing/frosting from the same bakery called joni's bakeshop, which no longer exists. as the years go by, we became less traditional. any cake, whether it's black forest, sans rival, with a candle on top is okay. sometimes, we prefer ice cream instead.

Birthday cakes were once quite traditional but as you say, it's not so important nowadays. As long as it is something you like, or even ice-cream, that should be all that matters.

Its a good cake. I love cakes on my birthday but I usually don't get it. When I was in my college, my friends got me sponge cake on my birthday and I loved it. They are an important part of birthday.

That's a beautiful cake!! I love birthday cakes and I also love baking them but I asked for no cake this year because I'm trying so hard to lose weight. I don't think I'll miss it that much because probably no one will listen to me! Cakes are important symbols. It's not really a birthday until you've had cake!

Some families put a lot of store on having a birthday cake. It's never been a big thing for us. I certainly couldn't have made anything as nice as this.

That is a good looking cake. Years ago we used to put a lot into having a cake for our birthdays, our son always had one, and he enjoyed helping either Daddy or myself make one for either of our birthdays. He liked putting the sprinkles on the icing, and of course eating the cake. We aren't much for cakes any more.

That's about our position too. The cake has lost its importance with us but I'm glad I remembered just this once.

That cake looks yummy! For my husband's normal birthdays, I usually make a chocolate pie instead of a cake. Since my birthday is four days after Christmas, I don't always get a cake (everyone's tired of sweets), but I always get some gifts and usually a nice dinner out.

Not everyone bothers with a cake. A chocolate pie sounds a great substitute to me.
