Going to lunch with a friend. Why I might "have" *her* for lunch.

A friend just called and asked if I wanted to do lunch. I was going to keep doing progress notes and eat some Trader Joe's Indian food--not very exciting--so I said yes.
She's a good friend, and an adult (in her 50s), but she has the unsavory habit of checking her cell phone when when we're involved in conversation.
Once, when I was telling her about my feelings about my Uncle passing, she laughed. I asked if she thought my Uncle passing was funny. No, it was a funny text from another friend.
If she does that today, I might have to...well... you know...

House rule...no cell phones at the table. . I like the idea of the cellphone stack when you go out for a meal with a group. All cellphones are stacked on the center of the table (no answering your phone). If you grab your phone to make or recieve a call or text, you pay for everyone's meal. Obviously there would be exceptions if there is an emergency responder or equivalent at the meal, but I'm sure you get the gist.

What a rude and callous thing to do while a friend is sharing his sorrow. I would not lunch with her again and might even strike her off my friends list. People are so involved in their phones now that they have stopped living.
Have a nice lunch! I hope she can enjoy your company without distraction.

Some thing are timeless. Like conversation. And really good music.
It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing (doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah, doo-ah) It don't mean a thing all you got ...

@celticeagle I will not "blow off" friends if they develop an addiction, whether it's to heroin, gambling, or cell phones.

@TheHorse Yes I did, I gave them a warning and it was only one warning. Our niece understood immediately that she had to keep her phone in her handbag when we met and had lunch together, because it happened that I left her alone in a restaurant.

@Gillygirl She avoided using her phone for most of the meal. Else I was going to drop *her* in the miso soup.

That is one thing that ticks me off more than anything @TheHorse . When I see somebody doing that I say, "Excuse me, am I bothering you?" They'll give you that quizzical look and I'll say, "I'm sorry if I'm an inconvenience."

To tell you the truth I would not go out to lunch with her anymore if she cannot put her phone down during the lunch. That is so rude. I would say something to see if she was listening at all and then tell her that you are having lunch and if she cannot put her phone down or turn it off completely then you will walk out and leave her with the full check. That may get her attention.

Well I hope your friend does not do that again to you. It sucks how so many people rely on their phones and going out to eat now a days you cant engage in a conversation. When I'm out with my boyfriend i do not even get on my cell phone as i pay all my attention to him. That's how it should be.
