Hawaii - Rat Lungworm Disease

April 13, 2017 3:55pm CST
Aloha from Maui! Islanders and tourists are all concerned about the cases of Rat Lungworm Disease here in Hawaii. What is Rat Lungworm Disease? The disease is a condition in which parasitic worm larvae infect people's brains. It can be life threatening. We are being told to wash organic produce very well. Majority of the cases result from eating raw or undercooked snails and slugs that are infected with the parasite. There has been 9 cases reported in the past 3 months. Six on Maui and three on the island of Hawaii. A newlywed couple from California became sick once returning home from their Maui honeymoon. This has got to be hurting the organic farmers.

I haven't heard abuot this disease but it sounds so horrible. As it seems it is really difficult to get rid of the worms in brains. In fact no matter what, it is better for us to eat less raw food. Some worms and germs will be killed by the high temperature.

I've not heard of that. I've heard of lungworm which affects horses , and I think they get it from eating infected grass.

Oh wow, I've never heard of it affecting horses. We have lots of horses here in the islands. They think the slug or snail's trail can even transfer the disease. It sounds like a horribly painful disease.
