Guess What I Found in the Water?

I went out to take a photo of my favorite iris today and I decided to move a small plastic container I'd put next to it to collect water from the rain a couple of days ago. As I picked it up, I noticed what I thought was a dead alligator lizard like the one in the photo in the water at the bottom. The water wasn't deep, but the lizard was submerged.
As I kept looking, I noticed it was alive, so I took the container and dumped it by a flower. I'm hoping that lizard will help keep the insects, especially those pesky mosquitoes, under control.
Have you had any surprises lately? Do you have this type of lizard where you live? How do you feel about lizards? Would you ever pick one up?

He looks like a nice good fellow, Im sure he will help you fight off those insects. We have similar looking geckos and salamanders here in the tropics

After I posted the picture I was looking through my files and saw that I'd taken a picture of the actual lizard that was in the water. I took it after I released it, and I'd forgotten already. Just goes to show what working on taxes can do to your brain.

@bagarad Though there are house lizards and some lizards outside, those types of alligator type of lizards are not common.

I found a black and yellow salamander under a bush near our pond. It's surely a baby because it's not longer than 3 inches. I remember that years ago I saw a very big one. I suppose there is a family of salamanders living not far from our property.

That is so cool. We don't have lizards here. I would definitely pick it up.

He probably crawled up the side of the container to get in. I let him out. Here he is where I let him out on the ground when I dumped the container to set him free. I'm not sure he could have gotten out without my help, but maybe he could have gotten out the same way he got in.

I live in a city and barely see a lizard ,but can see wall lizards in summer. I think the alligator lizard crawled there just for capturing insects.

I like lizards. As you know, they are pretty common in most of California.

I don't see many lizards around, but I sometimes see a little one around my front porch. Amazingly, I've only seen one get in the house twice. The first time, Guiness the cat caught it, and I think no one was more surprised than he was. He paced back and forth with a little blue tail hanging out of his mouth. I had to grab him and put him out on the porch and convince him to let it go.

I remember our white feral cat Trouble teaching her kittens to hunt. One little black one we called Piggy caught a lizard, and I still remember him eating it while growling the whole time at his siblings to remind them the lizard was all his.
