Selling items through "online garage sale"

Today has been a most unusual day. My mom gave me a lot of clothing recently - like 8 , 20 gallon bags full. :-) I picked through the things that fit me and were in my style and decided to sell the rest. I tried selling it through an online garage sale site on a popular social media site. For about a week I got no interest. I was just going to donate the rest. Until all of a sudden I got 2 messages. One was rather rude. But one seemed interested. As it turns out, the clothing took much more room than I thought it would. So I spread out clothing on my couch, living room furniture, coffee table, and bed. The woman came and bought a handful of items. $13 worth. (That was a fair amount because I had things priced $1 each for the most part) It was a lot of work for $13. But I made a new friend. That said , I think I will donate the rest. A lot of work for a little money. Mom let me keep the money because I did the work. Have you ever sold things at an "online" garage sale? What is your experience with it?

We have a similar local site and have sold quite a few things that way. We've also found free homes for some items.

@FayeHazel It's strange how decluttering also seems to free up your mind to some degree too.

That is so nice, even at free it clears up your space, and gives the items a new home

I think what Hazel has said. We can recycle the items and get some furniture repaid and put them for sale on the Internet along with a price tag. We can also sell new stuff also if they are not needed or in excess.

I've sold several things at online yard sales. In fact, I sold a Roomba (robot vacuum) today. You just have to be careful meeting strangers.

@FayeHazel I think they're good, I just worried about it running over cords. It's good for a circle area, but I just drag out my old vacuum.

So true, unfortunate but true - can never be sure who you are meeting these days. I'm happy for your sale. Hey how did you like Roomba? I've always been curious about those. Do they do a good job cleaning?

@1creekgirl Oh, I don't blame you there. I think I would wonder about that too. I know, I don't like vacuuming, but it sure is nice when it's done

I only did it once but I was quite successful at it. It was a bit of a bother but I got rid of the stuff and made a few extra dollars.

Wow that's nice! I haven't had any experience on selling things online, but reading your post makes me feel on trying it. But it's quite different here in our country. Some people here are not that interested on buying second hand clothes online, unless it is a second hand electronic gadgets or appliances. So what they do is that they sell it on "ukay-ukay" store, in which that store can sell your things in a very, very low price.

Let me know if you try it - I hope you have success. Sometimes it seems to go easily and other times more difficult. Online auctions sites seem to do best with more rare items. Though on Facebook - there are several "garage sale" groups. Where people who don't have enough items to host a sale, will post pictures and prices ,usually for cheap. I love the idea of that "ukay-ukay" shop... I wish we had that here

@FayeHazel "Ukay-ukay" stores are very popular here, coz for those people who can't afford brand new and expensive clothes, they can buy second hand branded clothes in "ukay-ukay" stores for a very low price. I even bought some of my clothes there. But of course before you wear it you have to washed it thoroughly, because it's not like RTW(ready-to-wear) clothes.

I tried online selling before, I had an online store in eBay. I sold books, audio CDs, assorted band merchandise, and novelty items. Did well for quite some time but eBay had changes in their policies that made it harder to make a sale so decided to close shop. If I were you, I'd keep doing the online selling for a longer period of time. Starting up is always the hardest. $13 is still more than $0.

@FayeHazel yes, I did. Thought of going back to eBay but there are other platforms to make an online sale.

I am glad you got the $13. I have thought about it so much. I have so many nice clothes from the boys that I would love to sell them online. I am nervous about it though.

I had this lady to my home because I had a TON of clothing, though most times people will meet in a public area, like a parking lot. I know, you can never be too careful though.

Sometimes it is more trouble then it's worth with online garage sales I had interest and held items then they decided they did not want them it was so frustrating for me

Oh that is so irritating, isn't it? I admit, I did that to someone once... but I told them not to hold it (it was a kindle) if they got an interested buyer. ... so I hope they did sell it....

Never done an official online garage sale, but I have sold stuff through sites like Craigslist. I had a good experience with it . . . I made things perfectly clear in the original post, put up pictures, and I asked that the taker must take all of it (no pick through-ers). I gave the bundle a great price - and I was ok to give a person a little more of a discount if they asked for it - they were hauling it away for me .

No , I don't sell online, garage sales, I haven't had a garage sale in ages, because I need help to do one and everyone gets busy and doesn't help. My neighbor always has one with lots of clothes and she usually does good with selling them cheap. For me storing a bunch of clothes to sell would be a big problem,so I usually donate things.

I never heard of an online garage sale other than Craigslist, if that counts, or Ebay. That rude person is a loser. I've donated things to Salvation Army and other thrift shops from time to time. I have a bag of books I've read that I'll be happy to offload and donate this summer.

@FayeHazel I don't like this. Why bother contacting you when being rude in return? I agree. I hope to donate and offload some stuff this late spring/summer season.

I know, right? I was a little shocked. Is it worth being rude over $1 a piece clothing? Another reason I think I will just donate the rest of the clothing. It feels good to donate. :-)

I haven't but you won't believe - my friend moved into a new home and their was a bar built from wood and tonnes of dark paneling. Someone came and bought the lot! Using a local classifieds-online, in South Africa ! I guess clothes are harder to sell but you never know who is looking for a bargain !
