A Stranger On My Lawn

Canada
April 24, 2017 7:24am CST
I was painting yesterday when my husband called me upstairs to see something in the yard and he said bring your camera. This bird was sitting under the bird feeder. He was taking the occasional bite of seed dropped by other birds. I took a lot of photos and went to the computer to find our what kind it was. I'm still not sure. I felt like the bird was not feeling well and that made me sad but I want to know what it is. Do you have the answer? I found a photo of the Common Grackle and it could be that one, then I found a photo of a Brewer's Blackbird. I admit I never heard of that one before. Any bird lover on myLot who can tell me who visited my yard yesterday?

I'm still not sure but I know we do have starlings around here so that might be the answer. Thanks.

@Morleyhunt We took our feeders down as soon as they finished the seed. We don't feed them when they can fend for themselves but the feeders are up and full from late fall to the a few days ago... We were having hundreds of birds visiting, and so colorful too... I love watching them

@PainsOnSlate yesterday while enjoying our lunch we watched the entire variety pack of birds stop by at our feeders. I'm thinking that could be a good discussion.

I have no idea what it is. The black has reflections of blue in the feathers. We have similar birds around here but I do not know what they are called. My boyfriend told me before but I did not pay enough attention.

@PainsOnSlate If I really want to know I do a search such as snakes in PA" or narrow it down to the county even. Sometimes the results are so large it can take along time to identify what it is.

not a grackel, they are brownish at the neck and head area and they have a different shaped beak. my guess is that its a raven. the shimmer leads me to believe its a raven, crows are a bit flat black color.well, thats my guess.

You are the first that sound like you know what you are talking about... This was a small bird, and when I see a raven I think big...

it looks a lot like a crow.. but for that shiny blue tint I see. But the beak looks very much like a crow or raven. so It must be in the same family.

@PainsOnSlate it is a lovely looking bird.. we just rehabilitated a crow that we found injured and unable to fly.. I got to see one of those beaks up close. They are impressive.

I'm thinking it is in the same family. It was beautiful with that sheen on the feathers.

I don't know what bird that could have been @PainsOnSlate , but I hope that after it had eaten that it got strength and found somewhere safe to heal.

Thanks for the laugh, it makes my day when a comment will make me laugh. Nope not a black bird, at least I don't think so but I don't know much about birds either.

@PainsOnSlate My favorite picture is the one where you see his eye. He looks almost like a vulture with that piercing look. Though I know he's definitely not a vulture. I'm glad I made you laugh.

If he is not sick he will fly away if you attempt to approach him--if he is sick he will attempt but fail to fly away.
