Better music back in the day!

Am I the ONLY one who would rather listen to the music from back in my time? I was born in 87, but grew up in the 90s and still listen to the music from my childhood and teen years. Heck, I even listen to some 80's every now and then. But I just can not get in the music of this generation. God that makes me feel so old lol. I like maybe a few here and there, but give me a 90's or 2000 playlist any day and I will be content. I even listen to it while drowning out my son's kiddie music. Don't judge me... lol. Peace!

@DanieGirl80587 Speaking as a fellow Millennial who's a year younger than you, be more accurate to say "mainstream music was better back in our day." Though let's be real here, even the 90s had its share of homogenized and forgettable acts. I mean name me one boyband that you remember that wasn't N Sync or Backstreet Boys. Music as a whole continues to put out subjectively good content. It depends on your taste really. I was exposed to a wide range of music growing up, but my preferences are Metal, Jazz, R&B, and Electronic. When it comes to rap and hip-hop however I'm selective to what I enjoy. Like Nerdcore, or Rapcore. But as a result I tend to find a lot of music and artists that appeal to me these days while mainstream music gets staler and staler over time.

I absolutely agree with you! I love 90's music and that's what I listen to the most on Pandora. Either that or Christian music-my 2 favorite stations. =)

@DanieGirl80587 Oh, me too, I grew up in church and my grandmother was a founder of a big church in New Jersey. A few of my uncles were ministers and we all spent a lot of time in church and especially loved Sunday nights as we always went and participated in hymn singing.

In 1987 people were complaining about how bad the music was then, and how they much preferred the music of the 60s. And in 1977 people complained about how bad the music was then and how they'd rather have "oldies." And in 1967. And in 1957. And in 1947. Modern commercial or mainstream music has been awful since they started "test-marketing" and "analyzing" the soul and life out of music. But there's still great music out there. You just have to search for it. I have songs that came out this year on my iPod...and songs from 1928.

@FourWalls I'd expect a person of your seniority to point that out, because in gazing at the annals of history, I saw that too. Back when I was growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, music of those two decades was considered "garbage," or my favorite "a bad influence on today's youth." Boy, you'd think after fifty plus years of each generation saying that, you'd think people would've caught on to the cycle by now. It's also no surprise that you're aware of marketing testing and how it's hollowed out mainstream music... I for one thought I was going insane when after I graduated high school and heard how homogenized and hollow main stream music became.

I love the oldies! There is nothing better. They definitely don't make music like they used too! I totally agree.

I am 90's kid but I also listen to songs from 70's and older. I know my music history unlike the close minded millennials who will only listen to an old song if it's covered by a young singer.

I graduated high school in 1960 and we had the greatest music in those days. I think everyone thinks there era was the best because that is what they grew up with. I also like the music from the 40's and 50's. The big band era and good old rock and roll.

Yeah I agree that most people of their generation enjoy their music that they grew up with. Only natural I suppose.
