Would you take a phone call on the toilet?

I called a dear friend last night on her mobile, talked for a couple of minutes, and then she told me she was in the Ladies room at the motorway service station. Yuk! I don't really want to know that. I don't need to know that. And honestly, I find it a bit icky. These days most of us getting phone calls can see who they are from so she must have known it was me. I would have ignored it and called me back if I were in her situation. So my question today is would you make or take a call whilst sitting on the toilet? And does it make a difference if you're in a public toilet with people around you?

I'll never understand the intimate relationship people have with their mobile phones.

That's very true. I put mine away at the weekend and totally ignore it.

I've been waiting in public restrooms and heard people talking on their phones while in the stall.. I also fund it gross. Not to mention rude to the others in the restroom

In situations like that I'm always tempted to start a loud 'conversation' with an imaginary friend from my side of the wall. Something along the lines of 'You know what, I can hear the person in the stall next to me on their phone...' 'What? Oh yes it's so funny, you won't believe what they're talking about, and I don't suppose the person they're talking to realizes they're in a public toilet...'

I must admit that in a traditional Indian squat toilet, I wouldn't have the balance to take a phone call.

Lol, what a weird situation! I would react the same way as you did, not to mention I don`t take phone calls in toilets. People don`t have decency any more.

@boiboing I might be tempted to text while enthroned on high but not to phone. Icky indeed, and I've heard background noises such as flushing cisterns on several occasions when friends have phoned me and was a trifle offended that they thought it ok to converse with me while at stool.

I would never make a call, or reply to a call on the toilet. I hate when I call my niece and she says she is on the toilet.

Or if you have a friend who talks for a REALLY long time and you just can't wait any longer, perhaps.

I wouldn't do this and if I knew the person I'd called was on the toilet I'd hang up and call back. I think it's pretty awful really.

Me too. As soon as she told me I said goodbye and asked her to call me back when she'd finished.

I rarely carry my phone anywhere, I certainly won't be taking it into the restroom.

If you're at home on the toilet I don't think it matter really...but in a public toilet it's weird...

Yes, I think it's very strange when you hear voices coming from a cubicle and you're not sure if they're on the phone or if there's somebody in there with them.

Never in a public - unless it is deadly important.

The only excuse to be on the phone in such a place would be if you had to call and ambulance or the police. Anything else can wait.

I wouldn't take a call while in the bathroom. It's not the place for it.

@boiboing Baths are fine. That's not an issue. It's just if the person is on the toilet or something.

I had a very dear friend with whom I'd have long calls whilst she was in the bath. I didn't mind that.

hmmm, usually at work people here take phone calls in the lavatory so they won't bother other employees. But it would be a bit awkward if she was pooping she may just be staying in the lavatory but not really doing that you know

no, the echo would bother me and i also dont want people hearing my conversation. in a bathroom a whisper sounds like a scream. sound gets amplified too much.
