TOO FUSSY?

How do you prefer to be addressed? This morning I responded to a member's discussion and was kind of jolted by his response. For the very first time on Mylot - or any other site for that matter, I have been addressed with "Hey Gal". I don't know if I am being a bit too fussy, but I wasn't pleased.
Have you ever been addressed in that manner? -or in any other way which you didn't appreciate?

wow, that is quite casual and badly thought out of him. I'd settle for Lord Of All He Surveys, Master of the universe, God, Great Almighty Emperor, your majesty, Emperor ... nothing too immodest ... lol

I always remember that usually those mylotters are newbies and English is their second language. And as English is my second language too, I prefer to stay quiet.

@Kandae11 You have had luck. There is a man from India that has not stopped calling my "dude". Only checking on my profile he would know that I´m no dude but a 71 year old woman.

I guess I wouldn't have minded that, but there have been times where the other person has assumed I was a guy and addressed me as "sir" or "dude". "Gal" would be ok with me, but I don't care for "Hun" too much . . . whether it's on a site like this or in real life!

I've been addressed like that by close friends but never strangers. I guess there are those online who believe we are all close friends.
The only thing I'd ever found disturbing was when a guy addressed me as hey dude .... uhhh, I may be a dudet but I'm no dude.

I agree. But usually those mylotters are newbies and English is their second language.

I agree @marguicha I think a lot of people struggling with English have no clue there is a gender attached to a word but still, it's a little disturbing when I think someone believes I'm a man.

@cacay1 Yes, we can be presumptuous at times and take liberties that we may not have earned.

A few here thought I was a male but I corrected them. No. I did not feel bad about it.

I've never been addressed as such nor have I addressed anyone with 'gal'. I've addressed a few girls here with 'girl' only after we interact for a while and develop some level of closeness almost like they are 'daughters' to me. I was taken aback before when someone called me 'Boss' here... But I didn't really mind it, just surprised because I'm not used of being called that here or irl...

@purplealabaster I'd be in a rage. "Boss" is my nemesis.

i would not want to be called DUDE especially from a newbie, because i have not yet gained connection with the person. i also do not prefer to be addressed as MA'AM because i think we are all equal here, although i sometimes address a few here, mainly due to their being respectful persons.

@Kandae11 that is so true. when any one of my students don't show courtesy to any of higher authorities, i would open my eyes so wide that the student will melt in shame. i prefer staring at them rather than berating them loud.

I don't really mind being adressed as Dude or Bro or Man it doesn't bother me, i often do say that to guys to, i know some women can be more sensitive so i dont usually say hey girl or hey gal or anything but with my girl friends i do i like to joke and play around.

@chrissbergstrom That is nice to be safe from others likenesses esp. if not so familiar to us.

It does seem a bit too familiar (and condescending) of a tone to use with a stranger.

@Kandae11 Either one isn't really a good thing to say to someone that you don't know.

Not knowing who made the comment, maybe it was just a regional, friendly greeting? I'm from the south and I always hated how the sales women in Jersey City, NJ called me "Girley."

How does this person even know who they are interacting with. You could have been a body builder or anyone else

I've not heard that before, but I don't like it when new people call me 'friend' and I've never talked with them before. It just sounds too familiar to me, but I think that some people from different cultures talk that way, or it could be the think we talk that way and want to fit in.

@Kandae11 I think when people write on sites like this one they feel that we all know each other already, which we know isn't the case. I think a lot of it is related to some of what others said here already in that if English isn't their first language, maybe they don't know it's disrespectful, or they've not a clue how to refer to us. I think using our first names is a good beginning, but why they don't I've no clue.

It wouldn't have bothered me. I think that is sounds friendly. If it bothered you then I hope you mentioned it to the person so they will know not to address you that way. I am sure that they didn't mean any disrespect by it.
