Poem for my Great Grandma Retha.

A Poem I wrote a few years back about my Great Grandma Retha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To a Great Grandma, I barely got to know... I remember the Christmas you came to see us... I came running for kisses, you we're so glad to be with us... You're laugh, you're smile, I can still feel you with us... I was 15 when you left us, but I was only 10 when I felt you leaving... It's a hard thing for a kid to understand, the sadness you felt losing you're only son... I felt that pain, that hurt, that unending sadness among us... I wanted to hug you, and kiss you, and tell you Jerry was still here with us... We still visited and enjoyed you're company, but I knew that life was so different for you now... I remember one of our last visits so clearly, you saying “to bad you didn't bring that camera”... I watched as you held you're first Great Great Grandbaby, My Neice Brittney... There is no photo of this moment, but there is a image as clear as day... I wish so, I could have more time with you, you could tell me about you're family, and you're childhood... We could travel to that reunion, we could meet that kin, you could help me piece together this family tree..... I think of you as I get to know you're sisters, every visit, every message, every email... Irene told me you would be proud of me and it has stuck with me, she does not know how much it meant for me to hear that... Agnes told me I reminded her of my Great Grandpa Leo, I wonder if maybe you thought that to... Visiting with Beula I could almost feel you're presence, sitting beside her hearing stories, I felt as though I was 6 years old sitting next to you, just listening... I close my eyes and try to remember more about you, but my mind fails me... To My Great Grandma, I hope you know, I miss you, and I love you so!!! Agreed we have a video tape of my Great Grandma at Christmas I run to give her a hug before anyone else, I don't know if it was how I was raised but I have always greeted the oldest person in the room first.

It is hard when someone has passed on and you feel like you missed out, and they too missed out on so much of your life. That is the way I feel with my real Dad who has been gone now about 13, 14 yrs who left when I was 4 and only met once as an adult.
