I just learned this today! The architect who designed the plans for Mt. Rushmore also wanted to build a room behind the giant carvings in which to store important documents, like the Declaration, chronicling America's history. After his death, however, the plans were abandoned until the 40s or so.
There's certainly a door there, but no one knows what is actually inside since it's heavily guarded and off limits to civilians. The room is called the Hall of Records.
Did you guys know about this secret room before now?

Why will they hide historical documents on Mt. Rushmore of all the places?
