Exercise is one of the basic components of healthy living. As we advance in years, it is critical that we incorporate exercise in our daily regime. However, not many of us have the time and resources to go to a gym. So, what should we do? Start walking today and every day. It is as simple as that. Walking is the easiest form of exercise which any individual can perform at any time of the day according to his/her own pace. Besides, it is free! All you need is a pair of good walking shoes. Walking outdoors in the park amidst nature’s bounty for 20 to 30 minutes, could be an exhilarating experience. For those who have the ability to walk at a quick pace, may find this outdoor exercise an energizing fun activity. However, for those who are bound indoors, it is vital to keep moving in order to maintain balance and improve flexibility. Walking indoors, however slowly, for short periods of time, could reap benefits in the long run. Why? Walking affects and enhances the inner workings of the body for all individuals, young and not-so-young. It is good for your heart and lungs; it reduces anxiety and stress and can even help to improve your attitude and self-image. Walking can reduce the onslaught of age-related diseases like dementia and memory loss. Do not procrastinate even if you are tempted to lounge in your couch as much as possible. So make walking your favorite exercise Believe you can do it, no matter what your age or bodily condition may be. IMAGE: Courtesy of Pixabay

Wow! @jstory07 I commend you for that. For me, one is enough as my hubby & I go to the Community Center for Morning Stretch exercise thrice a week.

Right. The more sports the more healthy and away from the disease.

Oh yes, @PatZAnthony there are plenty of other exercises like swimming, dancing which are enjoyable. But walking takes the cake as it can be performed by anyone at any time and costs nothing.

I love to walk, and I love to go for long and continuous walk. Somehow when we stop, we lose the momentum to go on walking. It is always hardest to start walking, and once we start to walk, and have a momentum, the worst thing to happen is to stop.

@Gabugs It is not good to brisk walk and talk at the same time. Much better to talk after completing a few minutes of brisk walk.

That's true @scheng1 You are right in a way. Continuous walking for at least 20 to 30 minutes, helps to quicken the pace and gain momentum. But, I wonder if one can walk at a quick pace and talk if you have a companion.

I do love walking. It is the main exercise for me now, though I have slacked off in the last months and I miss it. Thanks for reminding me to get going again.

@TiarasOceanView You are very welcome. Its always good to seek some kind of inspiration to begin walking again. You can visualize yourself becoming trim [if you need to] or meet acquaintances on the way or perhaps even have a walking companion. By the way, do you live close to the ocean? Just curious!

In fact I often go to work and go home on foot. But today due to the rapid development of the share bikes, I start to ride a bike more often. In fact playing badminton is my favorite exercise but unfortunately it is too difficult to find someone who likes to play with you.

A friend and I walk at six every morning. Since my foot surgery I can't walk as far as she does, but I'm going a little farther every day. I'll be back up to three miles a day again eventually.

@Gabugs I twisted it when walking on uneven ground. I tore two tendons and fractured the heel. It still gives me fits some days, but I enjoy walking too much to willingly give it up.

Walking isn't my favourite form of exercise but it is something I do a lot of. Between work and my dog I usually walk around 15 miles per day. I had no idea how far I walked until I got a GPS fitness tracker I was pleasantly surprised at the results.

@Gabugs It's helped greatly by a hyperactive dog that bounces off the walls if he ever gets less than 8 miles of walks in a day! At least he makes walking fun :)

Because I am limited in my time and have small children to keep track of, all the time, I sometimes walk in my living room. I just do circles while watching a show with the family. I am getting my exercise as well as staying involved with the family. I have also been known to walk circles around the soccer field, baseball field and gymnastics room while watching my kids doing practice. I don't miss anything but still get in my walk.It takes some effort, but you can work the exercise in, if you just get creative. I did not know it reduces the chances of dementia & memory loss, getting healthy and decreasing those diseases sounds like a win/win. Thanks for the info.

Walking is so much fun (for me). I love being in nature! It's even better if you can go barefoot, but then you have to stay on the grass, so that limits you.

Great post! I have been a walker on and off most of my life. In recent years, I've been bowling on leagues. I love it and it's good exercise, but I stopped walking after I started bowling. I miss walking. My bowling league season recently ended, so I've been planning to start a walking program again. I think your post is the motivation I need to stop just "planning" to do it and just walk!
