Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Flooding!

Port Dalhousie is a quiet little community on Lake Ontario, a part of the city of St. Catharines is a must see for visitors.
The community began as the first Welland Canal was built in 1820 connecting Lake Ontario to Lake Erie.
A lovely beach at Lakeside Park is a busy place in the summer. Also in the park is a historic carousel hand carved in the early 1900 and brought to the community in 1921.
A well run marina is there with hundreds of pleasure boats that spend the summer.
Years ago I had an art shop in Port with a friend who had a tea room. We shared the space. The shops, the marina and the park, the restaurants was a huge draw for thousands every summer.
Unfortunately for me and the shops, in September the tourists stop and Port turns into a ghost town. The restaurants did well during the winter but the shops died. I stayed for one winter and lost money but made it back in the spring/summer. Couldn't stand the boredom of winter so I gave up the shop. It was a good move for me, I made more money having other people selling my art.
With all the rain this last two weeks, Lake Ontario has flooded. There is damage all around the lake. Port Dalhousie included. The video attached I found on line, and if you put on your sound you and hear the water screaming. The Light house at the end of a pier shows the pier under water, I've never seen it like this before.
Enjoy the video and let me know what you think.

I agree too much or too little is the usual. I don't think we will need much rain for a long time.

@PainsOnSlate We've had very little rain here this winter and spring. I prefer the sun during the day but a rain shower over night would be nice.

@PainsOnSlate I would need an enhanced license to cross the border, and I don't have one.

@PainsOnSlate I am glad that at least it did not hit people, but I can imagine the damages are important.

Lots of damage in Quebec and Ontario, Port's flood did not hit any people, just the marina and park that is low land.

@PainsOnSlate We have to be careful, even in our own yards. This is getting ridiculous already.

I've never seen it underwater ever... it was a bit disturbing to see the video but I'm glad I saw it. I haven't been to the port in a while and a friend has a store but its high up above the water level, the whole town is up high, the low land is the parking and the marina and beach...

I remember once trying to go camping and the lake was flooded...first time I ever really knew that would even happen.
You couldn't see the boat piers at all.....and all of the camping spots close to the water you couldn't see either.
It was scary.

Our campground is next to a shallow rocky river from the mountains, We have seen it in flood stage but usually in the spring. One year it rained so much while camping the river was high and the rangers warned us if it got worst during the night we would be removed the next day. That was ok with us because our two weeks was over the next day. The noise of the angry river is awesome.

That man or woman with the dog was taking a chance in that video it seemed to me.
That is the trouble with places by water, so beautiful, yet so vulnerable to flooding.
I know what you mean about that, the quiet of the off season too.

I had to look at it again, I forgot about the dog. He was walking on the beach, it had flooded behind him but he was safe, it looks scarier than it actually is. I haven't been back to Port since the flood I should drop by to see what it looks like now. Fortunately all the building are high above the lake, the park and marina took the worst of the flooding.

We did hear that some homes were hit along the lake or the cities near the lake but in Port Dalhousie it was just the low land which was the marina, light house and a huge park under water. We used to live on the lake and all the houses were set up above the lake, i think that still is what is done by builders.

I haven't stopped there to see what it looks like yet, I know there was a lot of construction on the beaches and wonder if that came through the flood. The Carousal was sand banked and I think its ok and the marina is all about water so It should be ok. The lighthouse and pier were closed to humans before the flood because the pier was falling apart so I imagine it is under construction now. I will visit when I can with my camera.

Thank you, I love that photo. The rain did stop and things are back to normal, there was a lot of damage on the beaches and in some towns, but life is back to normal now for most of us.

I saw Quebec on the news, it was awful! at least here it was the coastal areas of Lake Ontario and didn't cause a whole lot of problems.

We have had flood warnings this spring to for the river I live next to. It is up. Thankfully I live on the high side and I hear it's been over 100 years since it came over the banks on this side.

@PainsOnSlate and flood insurance isn't cheap. Yea I'm glad to be on the high side, the low side has flooded every single year we have been here 16 years.

I'm not sure where port got its name. I should look it up. yup - I looked it up and we are named for the same person - Port Dalhousie is named for George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie, Governor General of British North America.
