Closing back the door to the past

Why should we let the door to the past open when the future can be much brighter! This is about my ''differently abled'' friend who helped me to see the brighter side of life. This friend of mine is engaged in ''wheelchair basketball''. One day I accompanied him to his training. That day I learnt some valuable lessons.  While my friend was playing he never looked back. He kept going forward and fought to catch the ball but was finally able to put it in the basket. Then I realised that it was time for me to close back the door to the past and enjoy the present moment. Why should I let past failures affect me. Whatever has happened was meant to happen and all I can do is learn from it. I am pround of this friend and his extraordinary talent.

I can be difficult to shut the door on the problems of the past, but oh it feels so good once it's firmly closed behind us. Then there really is nowhere to go but forward!

I totally agree. It requires tremendous efforts and courage to close this door but once you cross the threshold you feel like a different person.

@Nawsheen Yes, and it makes you appreciate life even more. No more constant reminders of things that used to be. It's very good to be able to do that.

Oh yes he is great indeed. He even went to Madagascar to compete in a paralympic basketball event. He is the second best ''differently abled'' athlete in my country. The best thing I learnt from him is about perseverance

That is the right attitude. Do not let the past govern your life, you have to move on and start anew.

I learnt from this friend. I learnt about perseverance and about how to be strong and let go of things. I am so happy to have such a friend. He helped me to walk to the other side of the door where I felt relieved because I was finally able to let go of things

Yes, we have to keep moving forward, to keep moving ahead, to do what we can do. I'm reminded of what the apostle Paul wrote on one occasion about his life, his past and where he was going. Philippians 3:13-14 Common English Bible (CEB) 13 Brothers and sisters, I myself don’t think I’ve reached it, but I do this one thing: I forget about the things behind me and reach out for the things ahead of me. 14 The goal I pursue is the prize of God’s upward call in Christ Jesus.

@Nawsheen Paul, because of his ignorance, even persecuted Christians, but when he came to appreciate the truth there was not much he could do but regret his past and move forward. The same zeal with which he persecuted Christians, he now used it to build up Christianity. What we did is done but today is a new day and a new beginning but what we can now do that is what we should do.

No need to keep thinking about the past. We still have many years ahead of us, and we have to make full use of the present. Everyone knows that we will not have our parents around forever, so now is the time to keep them company, and make them happy.

So right. Why let the pain of the past affects me and subsequently affect my family too. Life is short. Make the most of the present

@Nawsheen For many people, the past is not as good as the present anyway. That's why our parents want us to study hard, get a good job, and escape from poverty.

I think of it as letting the door to the past close, and sometimes it takes awhile to let things go, before you can move forward.

Sometimes you keep closing the door but it just keeps on opening. It takes lots of courage and determination to lock that door and never open it again.

At that point in life past failures had blinded me so much that I couldn't see opportunities arising. I agee that closing back this door is not easy but very difficult. I had to struggle. I just hope everything changes for you and you get to enjoy each and every moments. God bless friend

Even I'm proud of your friend and I think so are other readers. I too believe that it's best to keep the past lock and live the present moment without contemplating the future. At times, past can offer some beautiful presents to our present. And those are sweet memories and hard lessons. With that in mind and heart, we must always try to open new doors for ourselves and keep moving
