Do you feel affected by harsh weather?

In New Delhi, India weather now a day is very harsh. It is summer season here and temperature goes up to 44 degree Centigrade during some days. If one is inside during day time it is fine but if one is outside it is very difficult. I was discussing the weather conditions with a friend. Some of us are in such a job and profession where we are required to sit inside air conditioned offices/buildings and during day time we are not required to go outside. We leave our offices in the evening only, when temperature comes down a bit. There are many who are required to perform field jobs/outdoor duties and they had to be outside most of the time during the day time to carry out their assigned tasks. I and my friend were discussing how do they people cope with harsh weather and do they wish that they should have a comfortable job, which could save them from odd weather. May be they people get used to face hot weather conditions. What is your take on it? Image courtesy - Google

I understand that you live in North Eastern States of India and weather conditions are not so harsh over there. I really wish if you could arrange to send some rain to New Delhi.

Weather is really too harsh and when I see vegetable, fruit sellers on the roadside I feel bad for them, in fact many people have to do their job in the open areas even in the extreme weather.

Yes, you have rightly pointed out that some of the professions are such that people who are into it have little choice. I also observe vegetables/fruit sellers sitting on the roadside selling their products in harsh weather. Some roadside eateries, serving food to poor people. Even drivers and conductors of public transport buses, auto-rickshaws, rickshaw pullers, small ice cream/cold drink vendors and salespersons etc. (the list is endless). I feel lucky that we work in a safe environment inside an air conditioned building and we do not have to toil hard in harsh weather conditions.

We have the same problem in summer over here. It is preferable to stay indoors and not venture outside for risk of sun strokes. Some of us are lucky to be working in air-conditioned offices but unfotunately others have to toil under the boiling sun. But i guess those people are used to this weather as many of them are doing those jobs for ages

I think it is hot and humid at your place and it is not easy to go outdoor during day time. As your city is near sea level, there is always a possibility of sun strokes. Yes, you have observed rightly that those who work outside on regular basis, probably become used to the harsh conditions and they find out the ways to protect themselves

@Nawsheen We do the same here. During weekends, if we need to visit the market we go before 11.00 am or we go late in the evening. We avoid going outside after 11.00 in the morning.

It is really so hot in your side. Today the highest temperature here may be about 31 degrees. And it is rarely for the temperature over 36 degrees here. So I can understand that 44 degrees is so suffering. It is terrible to work outdoors.

Your weather is a little bit hotter than ours, 44 degrees celcius is already the hottest we reached this year. I guess if your work is in the field then there is no other way but to fight it by drinking lots of water, hat. umbrella, sun glasses, sun screens and maybe bringing water and a cold face towel to wipe. I think people will adopt for their family, I have seen a lot of hard working people here do everything to fight the odd weather.

Yes, you have given some good advice for the people who are required to work outdoor. They need to drink lots of water and liquids and need to protect from raging sun. Many have no choice but to go for outdoor duties.

@ravisivan - Over a period of time, weather has undergone a change. Now coolers are effective till April month only, thereafter, it gets humid and coolers become ineffective. One needs to have an AC so as not to sweat and feel uncomfortable.

Working outdoors in very hot weather, one should stay hydrated as much as possible. The outside job must be done, so i suppose people will get accustomed to it.

I feel so bad for many workers like construction workers, rickshaw pullers etc who have to stay outdoors even in 44 plus temperatures and they brave hot hot winds and dust. And things are becoming worse with passing years, with more severe heat waves, not only in India but in many parts of the world. One solution could be to adopt the Afternoon siesta model of some Arabic countries where nobody works for 3 to 4 hours in the afternoon and cover up in late evening or early morning. Or may be in at least formal organizations, there could be night shifts during extremely hot weather? What do you say?

Yes, you are very right that those who are required to work in field and outside the confines of a office, get most affected by the harsh weather. Your idea per se is not bad that work could be stopped for 3-4 hours in the afternoon, specially during severe summer season. This happens in the State of Goa and may be in some other States of India also, where shops etc. remain closed during afternoon.

The hot weather triggers my hot flushes. That's why , i am thankful that i work in an airconditioned office. At home, we open two windows when we go to sleep. Hubby and i have each an electric fan steadily fanning us afrom the foot of our bed. The problems is when going out. It's super hot , about 38 degrees celcius. So, when i go out i have my umbrella , my shades and folding fan . But once inside the jeepney, it will already be windy of course , while its traversing.

It means that you just cannot bear hot weather and you need to be inside in a cool environment, otherwise it triggers hot flushes. I think once you are inside your AC office, you forget about your outside weather. Are fan sufficient for feeling comfortable in hot conditions or do you use AC also at home? It is wiser on your part to use umbrella and glasses to protect yourself from heat. Does folding fan in cooling you down? I can understand while travelling you don't feel the heat due to wind passing through.

Actually I really can't tolerate the heat here in North India . I cannot go outside but yesterday I went out with my brother and seriously my head started aching so bad.. It is not easy to withstand the heat of Delhi and cities of North India, specially during summers. One should not venture out during day time to avoid heat stroke. Of course one needs to travel in AC transport e.g. cars, buses and Delhi Metro so as to avoid heat.
