That's a Lot of Mud!

With all the rain we've had, we knew it would not dry up quickly. The grass kept growing longer so on Friday my husband climbed on the mower and began the chore of cutting the overly long grass. How would cut anywhere that the ground would support the mower. He was just doing the finishing pass on one side when he felt the ground soften. He attempted to turn to higher ground....without success. Next he attempted to reverse back to solid ground.....again, without success. The forward momentum kept him moving....okay, he would try to drive through to higher ground....again, without success. Now the mower was well and truly buried in the mud. We used bricks, pieces of wood, rubber car floor mats, more bricks and a lot of hard work. It took us almost an hour to get the mower out of the mud. I was covered from head to toe. (They say mud baths are good for you.) Hopefully this mess will be fixable when it finally dries.

Getting stuck in that quagmire is not a pleasant experience but I see you retain your sense of humor. Mud baths!

My husband and I have often joked about how a video of some of our adventures and escapades would be hilarious. He was having a lot of trouble keeping his sense of humour intact while we struggled to get the mower out of the mud.

@josie_ the problem is we don't have the video. We'd need to recreate the events. The episode with the post hole auger would be a winner for sure. Even at the time, I literally fell to the ground laughing.

@Morleyhunt _Why not? A video of your "misadventures" might go viral in YouTube.

That looks like the kind of mud where the tires could have been sucked right off the mower!

@Morleyhunt Our backyard looks like a mud bog as well. We thought the landlord would drag out the deep ruts where our truck sunk in the mid in our driveway, but we were wrong. I guess I'll have to request it to happen.

It was a lot of hard work getting that mower out. The option of pulling it out simply wasn't there. The mower was about 200 feet from terra firma.

I won't even walk on my lot IF we were to get that much rain because some of the areas are just like that and I'd get stuck in the mud. Of course I do wish it would rain but I wouldn't want as much as you've gotten. Does the forecast hold any good news about sunshine and a dry spell for you?

Goodness, mud baths are supposed to be good, but not this kind of mud. It is sunny here today, may be the end of a very bad weather. I wish you a sunny Mother's Day.

@Morleyhunt Our forecast for sun has been changed in thunderstorm from 4 p.p., it's about 3 p.m. now and I have heard the first thunder.

The forecasted rain for today has been minimized. Now it should be less than a mm. The rest of the week is supposed to be sunny. Hopefully things will dry up a little. (In a month we'll probably be praying for rain.)

Getting bogged in mud happens so easily doesn't it? I'm glad you were able to get it out.

It took muscle, perseverance and a lot of ingenuity. We were too far from solid ground to be able to pull it out. The fence also posed a problem. When the new house was built next door to us, they raised up the area around their house. Now all the water drains to this lis spot.

@Morleyhunt Sometimes we have torn small branches from trees and used all sorts of things to provide some traction to get us out of bogs.

So very sorry to hear of your woes @Morleyhunt I can imagine you both getting deeper into the mud. My cousin who lives in British Columbia, Canad has problems in snow. I guess currently the weather would have improved. Wonder which part of Canada do you live?

Is it black mud? it will be very sticky when its wet ..this kind of mud is found in our country side. In the urban side where i live its red sandy mud. I like the black mud.

It is a dark clay. If the soil was sandy the water would drain away, but the clay over rock keeps a lot of water sitting around.

At least you were able to get the mower out of the mud and it wasn't like quicksand. Of course it's not something that you wanted to spend precious time doing. Hope the mower is okay and works next time without any problems

Hubby cleaned up the mower with the pressure washer this morning. This afternoon he gets back on and starts back to cutting grass.

It's dried up enough that we can at least cut most of the grass.

My husband didn't intend to drive into it, but once it sucked him in it was almost impossible to get out again. We managed with great difficulty and a lot of hard work.

It's dried up enough that 95% of the grass has been cut. Some of it could almost have been hayed.

What a sight would that be Since it was lots of trouble, have you considered using a grass cutter? At least it won't stuck in the mud.

We use a lawn mower (tractor) to cut the grass. My husband cuts about 10 acres altogether. If he used a small push mower it would take days and it was still too wet. I sank into the mud to my ankles.

Very interesting to know about it. So you had a mud bath. there is a country where a festival is celebrated.

I don't think I would enjoy a mud festival. I couldn't wash the mud off quickly enough when we had the mower free of the mud.

I prefer water and like to feel clean. The mud made the skin on my hands very dry.
