Do you think math is important for kids?

As a brat, math was one of may favorite subjects. The reason: either you got it right or you got it wrong. Even if teachers didn't like me, they had to give me an "A" if I did good work. As an adult, I enjoy teaching children about math. If it's younger children, I'm good at getting them to understand addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. If they're older kids, I'm good at getting them to understand stuff like degrees in a circle. In the attached picture, I'm teaching my neighbor friend about how there's 360 degrees in a circle. That night, I showed him how a right angle has 90 degrees, how 3/4 around a circle = 270 degrees, etc. Do you think math is important for kids? Do you enjoy showing kids how to do math?

Considering how math is used in nearly every aspect of daily life, whether people realize it or not, from filling up your coffee cup and adding cream and sugar (it's all about proportions), to filling up your car's gas tank (it's all about rates and unit rates) to obeying - or not - the speed limit on the way to where you're going in order to arrive on time, to paying for purchases to knowing if your paycheck is in the right amount, I'd say it is enormously important for kids to learn math.

@TheHorse I would be impressed. I know it has to do with terminal velocity being 32 feet per second squared, but I don't remember the formula.

@DWDavis I'm not sure what terminal velocity is (I do know the concept). But it's not relevant to most mine shafts. 32 ft/sec squared is acceleration due to gravity at sea level in a vacuum. Distance = 1/2 x acceleration x time squared. So if you know time, and plug in 32 for acceleration, you can compute the depth of a mine shaft without being Newton or Einstein. (d=1/2at^2)

Gee whiz. I agree. If I told you that I can compute the depth of a vertical mine shaft by how long it takes the rock to hit the bottom, would you be impressed? It's an EASY formula.

I think maths is important for everyone. I prefer do do general maths more. I still don't understand why children in high school have to do maths that they will not be used (all the time) in their real life...

What math is not used in real life? I refinish vintage loudspeakers (practical, not theoretical) and think in terms of angles and numbers all the time.

@TheHorse I don't know... the maths in high school, for year 10 upward. My daughter asked me to help her a few time with her maths and I had no idea how to work it out....

@TheHorse We never used a calculator during grade school years. We only have it high school for some specific topics.

@TheHorse - Two of our daughters are teachers ... one teaches math and one teaches special ed children, including math. Yes, I agree that math is very important. I think we allow kids to use calculators way to early in school. They stop solving problems on their own once they use a calculator, and then they no longer understand how math works ... and how amazing it is!

I wouldn't allow calculators in a school until the students understood the concepts and had moved on to subjects were calculations needed to be done quickly.

@Daljinder - Teachers in the United States start letting kids use calculators in about the 5th or 6th grade. I think that is a big mistake.

I believe that math is important for everyone. Wish my teachers had more patience and taught me better math skills. I struggle today with math and always have. As a child I was ridiculed in front of the class when I couldn't answer a math problem correctly. The teacher did nothing to diffuse the situation and it clearly impacted my ability to learn. I still have math anxiety!

I sincerely hope teachers shy away from that kind of "technique" today. It just creates a hatred/fear of math.

Even my favourite subject in school was maths. Still I teach it to my kids . They are in 4th standard and I had to do lots of hard work to make them understand addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

With me, it's words not numbers. But plane geometry? It rocks! I do use the basic math I learned in jr high school, and on rare occasions, I use some of the basic algebra I learned in 9th grade. As a girl in 1950s small town Texas culture, I was not encouraged to learn anything that would be useful in college. I was encouraged to go to church 3X a week, get married, clean house, cook, do laundry, grocery shop (math!), and raise a family. I loved plane geometry! It seemed a combination of art, math, and, very importantly, I loved learning those theorems. The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. I think there's a song about it... Here's a rap (if the link will work)
Written by Ernesto Lara Video produced by Jake "2Pi" Scott, 2 Pi Productions Lyrics: It's mathematics mathematical symbols and signs the most complex becomes...

@TheHorse Dunno if you care for rap (I don't) but I hear there are "kids today" who do respond positively to it, lol. There are other "hypotenuse songs" that are more melodic.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I also agree that maths is essential in daily life. But how you approach and understand it is important. Making easy steps will help the children to remember it.

Yes, I know it is. I find it hard to teach maths to older kids if they don't have a proper understanding of basics. I wish I could catch them young

Math is a very important subject.Basic mathematics should be always welcomed ,as it will help in future. However one need not be extremely good in maths unless and until he or she wants to pursue a career out of it.

Of course, it is important. Some parts more than others. I mean, I have no doubt that there is a lot of maths which will never be of any use to children other than to pass an exam. My eldest enjoys maths (and always has done) for the reason you gave - there is a right answer and a wrong answer. He was never a fan of English where a lot of the mark was down to interpretation. Not that he wasn't good at it, he was. He just prefers to know that he has an answer right than trying to figure out what the teacher will like best. I teach maths. I also teach English. I have one student at the moment. She is not good at maths at all. She would be better if she could be a little more confident in her own abilities but she's most likely never going to be any more than average.

Mathematics have been one of my favourites too and yes I loved teaching it to kids from Grade 4 to Grade 9/ 10. Particularly Algebra and Geometry. Oh the Trignometry. Well they all are fun But I do think there are just some stuff that kids don't need to learn in Mathematics and those are the tough stuff. I don't see why their grades have to suffer when a couple of things in the subject won't even matter later in life. Education is to educate and prepare kids for being self sufficient.

I think math starts getting hard once you get past Calculus 1. The "external connectness" goes away. But most never even get that far!
