For Catholics following the 10 commandments is enough to make them good human beings although religion is packed with rituals. What is your opinion on rituals whichever religion you belong to.

I don´t think that we have to belong to any church to follow rituals. Rituals are part of living in society.

I can take them or leave them. I just believe in God and read the bible.

I think some get ingrained into us without us realizing it even. Although I married through a Catholic Church La Virgin de Guadalupe and Kwan Yin are my "faith" things as you might call them. I don´t go to Mass as such but I do do a Rosary all by myself and change the words to suit me but they are good words even so.

@allknowing Although I am very practical on most levels this is something that I have always kept up. I can sing a prayer rather than say it and if I say it its inside my head really as no one appreciates that kind of thing around here.

Neither do I. But I am spiritual - that is my relationship is direct.

Rituals are needed to make people feel part of a community. Following only the 10 commandments does not makes a good citizen, due to the amount of laws we have, and the licenses, IDs, etc, we need in our daily life. I don't read in them that I have to pay taxes and to have a driver's license and an insurance for my car, so am I a good human being if I don't pay my taxes and drive without a license ?

If you expand those commandments there is everything is in there including having a valid driver's licence.

@allknowing There is absolutely nothing about the authority/laws of the state, and it is normal, because all Christians were rebelling against the Roman Empire at the beginning. Read a few acts of the martyrs if you doubt about that.

I grew up Catholic and was always uncomfortable with the confessions part of the religion. I believe in god but I no longer participate in the whole Catholic thing.

Same here. I am kind of liberated. For me following the 10 commandments and reaching out to the needy is enough. And that confession part comes under the church commandments (lol)

The Church would welcome you back with open arms. As a convert to Catholicism, I am not comfortable with the confession/reconciliation either, and do not partake of this particular sacrament often. From what I've been able to tell in 9 years of attending Mass, most Catholics these days don't go to confession anymore.

@DWDavis Oh really I didn't know that. I told my parents I wasn't going to do the confession thing ever again when I was like 15. I went to Catholic school from 1st grade to 8th. Church 6 days a week. I know the church would accept me back I just don't want all that ever again.

I don't if its called rituals but to some this is the process. I think 10 commandments is not enough because that was old testament and in new testament there are some rules we are oblige to follow if we want to go to heaven.

@allknowing Yeah we must follow those commandments but in the new testament there are other rules we must follow.

I think if it helps people then all for it. My question is if you need all that, might be doing something wrong that you are not happy with yourself about. My opinion of course. I do not mind people exploring and just trying to grow though.

It does help people because they do not want to analyse why rituals are actually needed.

@crossbones27 Religion is the opium of the masses and they believe that rituals are a part thereof.

@allknowing Yeah, but that is kind of lazy don't you think, or you just think they do not want to know the ugly truth of life? Interesting question you put forth here.

yes, that'strue. but being a person, some of us cannot make it. like the 1st three commandments, not all of us have the same faith and some of us have many saints. and4 to 7, cannot avoid not to do it.

I have often said that each of us have to relate beliefs depending on our own ability to absorb them. Some blindly follow them which to my mind is not quite the right thing to do.

It may seem perfect to follow the 10 Commandments. But some people don't follow it strictly.

As a Catholic, I can promise you there is much more to being Catholic than "following the 10 commandments." On the short list are the commandments Jesus gave in the New Testament: Love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you. Pray for those who despise and persecute you. These commandments are much harder to keep than the ten Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. I enjoy the rituals of Mass, in part because I know that no matter where I go in the world, or what language the Mass is being celebrated in, I will find myself familiar with what is happening, and will be among my brothers and sisters.

That commandment 'Love thy neighbour...............covers all what you have listed. Nothing is easy and most of us fail to keep up but we are all human beings and fail we do.
