Well, it does feels sad to be in such a family environment, and once things start getting over, one does feels sad.
We also used to had such get togethers. But many of the people in our families, who were in our grandparents age are no longer and now the meetings are less frequent.

So basically your vacation was like a family reunion. I know only one person who goes to a family reunion once a year and he said he really enjoys catching up with the family news and spend quality time with people he sees only once or twice a year. They seem to enjoy it a lot.

This is where I break from tradition a little.
See, growing-up I always had fun at our family get-togethers (Easter- & 'Independence Day'- and Christmas-reunions every year since before I was born)---where all the other 'grandchildren' and I could meet, play, and get updated on how our lives were progressing.
Now that I'm grown & still single (with no children of my own) while my cousins have gone on and gotten married & had children (and even some grandchildren!), I can't help but feel a little depressed--more depressed every year--as my cousins' new children & grandchildren serve as a constant reminder that I have none! ... that I'm not a worthy addition to the family!
(Though no one in the family would ever admit that I am not a worthy member of the family, my un-married status and my lack of any children or grandchildren speak for themselves )

it great to spend time with family but if you are really close the sad part is when you have to depart and leave one another enjoy the time that you have for as long as you can life is to short so you need to cherish each moment.
