The courage of a small plant

When my sister was visiting no more than a fortnight ago, our neighbour gave me some iris rhizomes. There is a lot of granite around here and not many places where I could put the plants. However there was one small bed under the kitchen windows so we duly planted them and wished them luck. I’m not known for any green fingers. I was amazed this morning to see that one is flowering already. It isn’t anything special but I think it must have a lot of courage to bloom so soon after a major upheaval in its life. Some people are like that too though aren’t they?

They are, aren't they? No matter what the odds they hang on in there.

I love the fact that irises will take hold and bloom beautifully even if they have seemingly little soil to root in. I transplanted quite a few of my after they were taking over my main bed. When I did move them, I doubted they would bloom. Then lo and behold on one fine spring morning there they were. Beautiful shades of purple. There are some people I do know who are strong willed just as an iris. They stand on wobbly legs until they are persevere against all odds.

@JudyEv I just covered them as best I could. I am sure that the rain washed some of the soil away. I didn't know that some of he rhizome needs to be out of the soil though. I'll keep that in mind when I get more.

@ElusiveButterfly It seems a strange requirement as it doesn't give them a very firm support system.

And I was told some of the rhizome needs to be out of the soil. Did you know this and do you plant them that way? I'm just curious really.

I think it is quite a common plant. The flag iris are very pretty too, and a bit more spectacular.

I like seeing a plant that takes its process of blooming. Some people are like it. I am that person, a late bloomer.

@JudyEv Last year I planted sunflower seeds - a whole pack of seeds. None came up - this year - abut 5 weeks ago I planted a pack and they are all growing and thriving. Same dirt, same rain, same water??

So pretty. I planted a dozen iris a few years ago.. The fist year nothing but leaves. And scraggly leaves too. The 2nd year the made it all up.. This year they bloomed.. A week ago. And only 10 are flowering but pretty too. I took this a few days ago
