The Importance of Wearing a Bike Helmet

I was, for a long time, a guy that didn't wear a bike helmet as I rode. The only time I wore a helmet was while mountain biking or riding at night. Now I wear one everytime I get on the bike.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, while bicycle fatalities are down overall, they do have some interesting statistics: in 2014, 429 cyclists died while not wearing a helmet (60% of all cycling deaths,) while 118 died while wearing one (16%.)
Being a guy riding sans helmet, I eventually changed my mind. One day, I was in the middle of a 35-mile training ride, and for some reason, I chose to wear a helmet that day. I went down, hard. My head slammed onto the bike path, so hard, that had I not been wearing a helmet, I would have gotten, at best, a concussion. Thanks to the helmet, nothing happened to my noggin.
I still hadn't learned my lesson, and continued to ride without a helmet. But on another training ride, not too far from that crash, I got lucky that I chose to wear a helmet that day, too. About halfway through my ride, I got caught in a severe hailstorm. My helmet saved my head a pounding from quarter-sized hail as I rode home. I was still getting punched in the mouth by the stuff, but my skull was safe.
Finally, back in the 90's, one of the Denver TV stations did a piece where they dropped a melon from the top of a ladder. It splattered all over the place. Then they dropped one that was in a bike helmet. That melon survived.
I now feel naked without wearing my helmet, even if I'm just riding to the liquor store.
Basically, while I ride I see lots of kids wearing helmets, I see a lot of the adults without them.
Yes, it's important that kids wear helmets, but you should too. We don't want your head to end up like that first melon. We also don't want to see you end up as a statistic.
Don't be like younger me. Wear a helmet when you ride.
(Photo by me. My friend is not wearing a helmet as he endo's over the bars. Luckily, he was ok.)

I am happy to hear you wore your helmets especially on the times needed them! I had a stage where I thought helmets weren't cool, but I never went anywhere far enough to fall just on the sidewalk. But now if I were to go on a bike, I recommend helmets and would wear them too.

@infatuatedbby - Oh most definitely. I never used to wear seatbelts. Now I always do. And not just because it's the law.

@teamfreak16 It is mandatory out of cities during the night or under bad weather in France (like fog or rain). Some cars are speeding, and I prefer to be seen, I take it all the time. I am afraid if the night happens when I am still on a busy road without lights.

I don't wear the safety jacket. I probably should get one for the rare occasion that I ride at night.

@topffer - I just try to ride in traffic as little as possible. If there's a bike path or side street,I'm on it. I still should probably get a jacket or vest.

I once had a friend who's motorbike and herself went flying over a pick up truck. She had a helmet on but it was not buckled..she forgot to do it. As a result her helmet flew off her head and she got the really severe concussion with long term damage. However, the doc said that if her helmet had been buckled, the force would have broken her neck..so I pondered on that one for a long time, if, if not you know.

@teamfreak16 Yeah not sure about what the doc said..because she still got her head smashed..and the dirty authorities that found her in the road gave her a dang ticket for not knowing who she was..can you believe that? They asked her name and she had babbled some incoherent name (no wonder) and they gave her a ticket for false impersonation..JC!!! Had to fight it in court.

Good that you were wearing it that day Scott. It is very important to wear a helmet on your head on a bike like wearing a seat belt in a car.

Even with a helmet, terrible things happen, but wear a helmet always! Why do some take chances with their very life.

Adults should actually be wearing helmets more than kids because children model their behavior from adults. But then again, I'm too lazy to wear helmets, especially if I'm just riding the bike to get to a store some blocks away from home.

That's another reason I wear one. Back when I started riding with my then-girlfriend's kids, I started wearing my helmet so they would wear theirs.
