Do you like mushrooms in hot and sour soup?

We are huge fans of mushrooms and use these to make hot and sour soup as well as use them in other dishes. We've heard some enjoy hot and sour soup, but don't want mushrooms in their soup.
Because we are making the soup at home, of course, we think we can put whatever we want to in our soup and call it "hot and sour" without being corrected.
The photo here is of the soup made yesterday. Always delicious and served with our homemade lo mein noodles on the side. The mushrooms are considerably smaller after the soup simmers for a good bit.
Two people here are of Asian descent but have no clue what makes a good hot and sour soup authentic. We don't feel too concerned, we just want to enjoy our soup!
It is easy enough to remove mushrooms from a bowl of soup if you don't like mushrooms, but the hot and the sour will have to stay!

We are fortunate that it is not much of an issue here @jstory07 We also use the large shiitake mushrooms in many of our recipes here.

Hot and sour soup is offered in Asian restaurants here. Someone in the family (decades ago) decided they could do a better job @toniganzon and they came up with several recipes for hot and sour soup.

Have you had hot and sour soup before? I'm guessing that you have.

Hubby generally likes hot and sour soup, if you leave out tofu and noodles. I am not so wild about the soup, but definitely love mushrooms. I have some just waiting to be made into "stuff". I put them in a lot of dishes that I make especially for myself.

The tofu we use is fermented and served on the side @GardenGerty
Our hot and sour is better than any we have had in a restaurant. Not sure what they use, but not the same ingredients as we do at home!

@PatZAnthony I never cared for the restaurant stuff. The broth was too thin and not particularly hot or sour. It also didn't have enough meat and veggies.

@Marty1 If you use a vegetable broth and omit any meat-based ingredients, it's actually a vegan recipe. The mushrooms are pretty traditional, depending on the country where it's prepared. Authentic recipes use things like wood ear fungus, but I think most folks in North America use shitake or button mushrooms.

@PatZAnthony When I was a kid when my father ate soup he slurped so much it drove me crazy. It actually turned me off of soup.

I've never heard of that before and I've working in pharmacies, I'd think I'd have heard about it if it were true. I doubt anything that grows outside and that is edible would actually cause colds. I can see if someone were allergic to mushrooms that it could cause a runny nose, but even though allergies have similar symptoms to the common cold it's not the same thing.

I find mushrooms tasteless and without any flavor or aroma. Given the choice, I do not like to take mushrooms in any kind.

In this soup, the mushrooms soon shrink up and are not as large as in the beginning @snowy22315
Some make mushroom soup, which is something no one here likes, although we like mushrooms in most cases.

Yes I love mushrooms in the hot and sour soup.
The only kind I ever had that was made to my taste was in a little shop in MA.
Can't find it anywhere like that here.
Yours looks delicious.

I like mushrooms and I also like hot and sour soup. I know that to make the "real thing" you should use broth that is flavored with pork blood, so my hot and sour is for sure not authentic. the American Chinese version is made with bamboo shoots, mushrooms, ear fungus, day lily buds, vinegar, egg, corn starch, and white pepper.

We don't use animal products and the Asian family members have never used pork blood in anything @LadyDuck
Of course, we don't care if ours might not be considered authentic, it is better than anything we have had in a restaurant. Isn't that odd?

@LadyDuck Yes, making it at home is always our choice now! You are an excellent cook from what we have seen from you over the years. It is hard to find a place to eat away from home when you know yours is better-

I've never heard of hot and sour soup before. What ingredients make it sour? It sounds like it may have some vinegar in it, but maybe not as I don't know whether vinegar is used in Asian cooking or not. I personally don't like mushrooms and would keep them out of the soup unless a smaller quantity could be used. My husband does like mushrooms but I'm not sure that he'd like it in soup as much as he'd like it on a hamburger or pizza or something like that.

@MarshaMusselman Hot and sour soups are spicy according to taste. Some like theirs so hot, it would not be for me!
About the vinegar for sour: Can millions of Asians be wrong?

@PatZAnthony By hot do you mean spicy or mainly not a cold soup? If spicy, I can't quite imagine having spicy soup with a taste of vinegar.

I love mushrooms in almost everything. I am also a big fan of hot and sour soup. The first time I tasted it, the soup was made by a Canadian couple in a little cafe near my college. They made it with chicken, water chestnuts, tofu, and big chunks of mushroom. I loved it, so I've always made it the same way. I might omit the tofu if I don't have it on hand. But it HAS to have mushrooms.

It is really tasty (to us and everyone here) but we do have one family member not a fan of the feel of mushrooms, so he pushes these aside.
