Do You Need New Pillows?

United States

I was just reading something recently about pillows and how you should wash them every three months. I usually never wash pillows and just replace them (but not every three months). Do you wash your pillows? If you do, do they come out nice and fluffy and like new? Well, that is what the article stated. Washing pillows can restore them to new quality. However, they did say there is a trick to finding out if you need new pillows. Simply take your pillow and bend it in half. If it pops back then your pillows don't need replacing. If they stay bent then you need new ones. I tried this with my pillows and they flopped back but not as quickly as I would have liked. So, according to this theory my pillows don't have much life left in them. Of course my pillows are well broken in and don't even fluff much anymore. It will be sad to part with my comfy pillows (when the time comes) but it will be nice to have nice new fluffy ones to rest my head on each night. Before I toss the old pillows anyone up for a pillow fight?

I have washed pillows when something got spilled on them, usually happened when they were taken out of the bedroom and used as props in the living room. Didn't happen often so didn't get washed often. I usually replace a pillow when it's old and worn out. I love a good pillow fight

We never used foam pillows, always feather, now we have My Pillow and they get washed twice a year. the guy who invested my pillow says to wash them. These are very unique pillows. I have thrown out all others.

@Marilynda1225 They certainly are - they are less costly than the down pillows we used to buy! Ours are almost two years old - they are guaranteed for 10 years.

So I guess washing pillows keep them not only fresh and clean but they go back to being fluffy?

I use a pillow that has " kapok" or cotton tree material inside instead of synthetic fibers. There was a time when I sneezed everytime I was about to sleep and discovered the synthetic fiber had degraded. I will pillow fight you anytime in my pajamas lol, oh wait in my sleeping shorts cause it's so hot here, let's get ready to rumble

I use a down pillow, I keep them for years. I always have them inside a pillow cover and then a pillow case. My favorite down pillow is probably 15 years old and I refuse to get rid of it, I sleep with it every night. lol I do wash the pillow covers regularly.

*pillow slap* Oh gosh . . . we could do origami with our pillows - they need to be changed out badly. I find that pillows just aren't the same after washing - maybe I'm washing them all wrong!

Yes Ill pillow fight. I would like to wash mine more, but that dang laundry I need to go to is a bit of a truck for me so I just usually make due for a while by placing them in the sun. When they get too raggedy about 8 mos or so, I will replace them.

Sure, bring it on I'll have a pillow fight with you! I have never attempted to wash a bedroom pillow, but I do replace them probably twice a year, except for our obus pillows, they tend to last longer. I like a fresh, soft pillow, my husband does not and will take my cast off for a few months before he needs a new one, and then I have to break that one in also. Men!

Breaking in a pillow is hard work but a nice soft pillow is what I like too.

I use pure wool pillow, they are expensive, but they do not need to be washed as much as the other pillows. I wash them every two to three years, but I use double pillowcases that I wash every week. The pure wool pillows need a very careful washing to prevent felting or lumping.

@Marilynda1225 Yes, the pure wool pillows require a lot of care, but I like them so much. We always had wool pillow and we feel so uncomfortable when we do not sleep in our bed.

I never had a wool pillow but I would assume it would require special care when washing.

This is really interesting to know about the condition of the pillow. I will do that. I too do not change pillow once in three months.I just change the cover once in 15 days.

Occasionally I would use a damp rag with a mild, pleasant smelling disinfectant to wipe them - then they are placed in the sun for the day.

No pillow fights for me with my sore arm! We buy new pillows every so often and always use a pillowcase cover which I wash. Right now, we have magnificent king size pillows by Temperpedic.

Put`em up!!! I love to pillow fight. I wash Tony`s and they DO NOT come out good as new, they come back lumpy but he is hell on pillows so I wash and he bends and folds and ..... Mine? no because they are huge king size. I replace about once a year if they need it. Some of the better bands last a long time.

I've washed pillows. Sadly they don't fluff up like they claim they will. I wash my husband's pillows fairly often. He sweats and the pillows start to stink if I don't.

Pillows are dear to me.(Sometimes more dear than my loved ones) because they are the true companion of me.tmThey don't judje us.They just listen to our problems silently.
