If you are aware that today is National Doughnut Day you may have already been to Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme for your free doughnut. Or is it donut? The Daily Poll on Swagbucks today was about using doughnut or donut. Many here also belong to Swagbucks and would be aware of National Doughnut Day through that site. If you are anywhere online today you will see something about the free donuts (it seems Dunkin' Donuts has taught Americans that it is not doughnut) at at least the two places mentioned here. Local private shops might not be offering a doughnut or donut today. Will you be hunting for your free donut or doughnut today and which word do you like to use?

I would have liked a free donut but it is not worth the long bus ride and walk to Dunkins.

Noooo. I will not fight a crowd of people for one free doughnut. The lines will be a wait of one hour long, betcha!

We took someone to get his (he had to buy a drink for the donut to be free at Dunkin' Donuts) and there was no line! However, the woman behind the counter said they would expect to give out at least 500 free donuts @andriaperry

It was not Doughnut Day outside the United States, nobody here proposed free donuts.

What you make at home would be better than anything they have @LadyDuck We've viewed the photos of your fabulous desserts!

@PatZAnthony Thank you. Everything made home is better. We used to make something very similar to the doughnuts for the Carnival time, the period of time before the Lent.

I read another post about it. No, I'm doing my best to stay away from sweets. I haven't been to Dunkin' Donuts since I moved to my new apartment last August. That doesn't mean I haven't had donuts in that time, I have. Enjoy your free donut.

This is something we don't eat @just4him They contain dairy, eggs, and other allergens, plus all that sugar that it seems most would do better to avoid.

@PatZAnthony I agree they contain a lot of sugar. I'm not a vegetarian and enjoy dairy products and eggs.

@RubyHawk Yes, I knew you would not be too excited about donuts/doughnuts. Now, a nice fruit or veggie tray seems to be more your spread and mine too!

I heard about it being free donut day yesterday, but didn't act on it. Having a craving for a plain donut about a week ago, I indulged in one at DD. It wasn't what I expected. Guess I should make some homemade. They are the best.

@PatZAnthony you go that right! I can taste the artificial crap they put in boxed mixes. Tastes nasty.

Foods have changed @ElusiveButterfly The manufacturers say no, it is US, not THEM, but the foods are not the same. Too much artificial nonsense, so homemade is always better to us.

Actually when I go with my friends to any donut shop I always get what I like the best there free. While my friends buy the donuts, I get the hole in the donut. I eat that for free. It is non-fattening!

Yes, @Shavkat it seems this was just a National Doughnut Day! When International Doughnut Day happens, you will see free offers.

A donut is a donut not a doughnut! I worked for Dunkin's regional office for 10 years and never ate one donut ....still don't...I don't eat fried food of any kind. Now a muffin is a different story

@PatZAnthony I went to DDU (Dukin' Donuts University) where we made the donuts and I can still smell the grease and that was in the '80's LOL

I like donut, and I like donuts but I didn't go to either place because I don't like their doughnuts. Krispy Kreme is too fatty/greasy and Dunkins are doughy. My favorite doughnuts are the chocolate ones with chocolate icing I sometimes find at the grocery store. But I didn't go out and get one of those today either. I generally overthink and today in the overthink mode, I ruminated about today being a national Day. Why would do(ugh)nuts get a Day? I imagined millions of Americans getting the message about Donut Day and in concert going out and getting donuts. Was Donut Day sponsored by Krispy Kreme and Dunkin? I ruminated so much I bored myself and fell asleep. By the time I woke up the Day was almost over so I skipped it. I have been craving donuts lately. I think I'll declare my own private Donut Day. Maybe tomorrow, after I mull it over a bit more. On second thought, the middle syllable of doughnut is ugh.

Love the ugh thought @blitzfrick We don't find doughnuts appealing, but that is no doubt because the ingredients are awful (to us) and making things at home is just better.

@PatZAnthony Every now and then I get a craving, but one sugar-laden glob of greasy dough is enough to remind me why I don't eat them more than maybe once a year.

We recently got a Krispy Kreme outlet in the City and I bought the BIG box of 12 to bring home - they were polished off in a whisp. NExt time I might have to bring two boxes of mixed donuts.
