Anyone Want a House?

Our younger son is getting married on October 6th. He will have a short honeymoon weekend, then a 17 day honeymoon in Asia in November. If that isn't a heavy enough load already, he has just put his beautiful home on the market.
He bought it brand new, added a fenced in yard and stonewalls. It is pristine.
He and his fiancée have been looking at new homes and land for possible building. They insist on a new home only. We like our homes big and beautiful in our family, and a little, old, ranch house doesn't cut it for us.
He wants a house that will be a home and to be right from the moment he moves in. We gifted our older son with a hefty sum when he bought his first co-op in Manhattan, and insist we do the same for our younger son.
But the most exciting news of all came yesterday when his boss, and soon to be partner, told him he will pay for the down payment, no strings attached. His boss loves him almost as much as we do!

@Courtlynn Huge, but not too huge. Taxes are ridiculous here in CT.

@DianneN Yes he is a great lad and has done well in life Dianne. So he will look for land to build the new house on?

@TiarasOceanView Thank you! He would rather buy a house built to spec by a well known builder or a house that has everything he wants in it. He'd buy land and build as a last resort. He is busy with the wedding, work, and fiancée. Oh, and playing with his cats!

@NJChicaa He needs a dedicated office, a couple of bedrooms for his kids, and a room for his cats. lol Those are his words. My father built a beautiful ranch house for us when we were little. Some are just lovely, while others can be plain and an eyesore. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. He's looking at a new area with a cul-de-sac. I have a dear friend who lives nearby in a 5700 sq. ft. house. She and her husband never wanted children, but told us they like all the room. Her house is freaking gorgeous. We will keep our house for several more years. We need the extra bedrooms when my son and his family visit for weekends.

@DianneN so he is selling that for a BIGGER house? wow. And I wouldn't call that type of house in the picture a "ranch" house. That is a Colonial McMansion. Ranches are one floor homes and, yes, tend to be older because no one builds them any longer. The good news about living in them is that you are in established neighborhoods with trees and older families that all know each other.

Wow that's amazing that his boss offered the down payment so along with your generous gift they should be well on their way to finding their dream house. Their wedding is coming quickly.

@DianneN - That is wonderful news. The house in your photo looks very similar to the home of our daughter in Delaware, except her house has two wide porches across the front, one on each floor, with large columns in front. Otherwise, the homes look almost identical. She and her husband, a scientist with a major company, built their home new, too. It has four bedrooms and a finished out basement which is plumbed so another bedroom and bath could be added there, too. Plenty of room for their growing family (they have two little boys and may have one more baby before they are finished). The photo above is of the house they owned when they lived in Boston and her husband was doing research at MIT. It is a lot like your son's house, too.

@DianneN - That's how I feel, too. I just want them to be happy. I forgot to mention when I posted the photo of our daughter, her husband and the house where they used to own in Boston ... that house was 80 years old! It was charming, on the top of a hill, and had been extensively remodeled, but I like their current, new house in Delaware because it is warmer, better insulated and beautifully finished out, with all the latest features. I just think it is interesting how much the younger generation likes the old styles from nearly a century ago. The outside of their 80 year-old Boston home is similar to the one your son lives in and similar to the one our daughter and her husband currently live in, with wood siding and shutters on either side of the windows. Interesting, isn't it?

Oh your son is so fortunate! His boss might like the way he works, that's why he will pay for the downpayment for his new home! It could be his wedding gift.

@Nawsheen That's the type of house he wants. It's all open concept with very high ceilings on every floor, a mudroom, full finished basement, full attic, crown molding throughput, a fireplace, top of the line appliances, etc. I hope he finds the one that's perfect for them, too!
