And the Bad News Is ...

I had my appointment first thing this morning with the doctor at the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic. He said my numbers weren't high enough for knee replacement surgery. They need to be at 51 and mine are at 40. So replacing my knees is out of the question. Doing so would cause fines for the office. The Good News ... He is in agreement that I need replacement surgery, but one major thing needs to happen before it will even be considered - I need to lose weight. I know that. I've been fighting this for twenty years. He's referring me to a nurse practitioner that will help me with my weight - extremely good news. In the Meantime ... There is another option they are going to consider that will help my knees until I can have the surgery. It's not a long term fix, but it's a fix. I would need to look at the paperwork again to know exactly what it is they proposed, but it's something to do with the nerves. So the good news is that I will not be going into rehab, not for a while anyway. I do not need to worry about Art Street. I will be there. So in that regard things are working out. Just not for my knees. I sign the contract today and send the money for the book to be completed. So it's just a matter of time now before Freedom's Cry is published. That's the news - the bad, the good and the alternative. How are things going with you? I hope it's all good. Thanks for reading.

I'm sorry to hear that your knee replacement isn't going to happen right now but losing weight can help take the pressure off the knees. I've been telling myself this for ages as my knees are horrible. Hope the alternative will work and happy that you'll be able to get your book into publication

Yes, I need to lose the weight so that will be the best part of this deal. I've been trying for too long and nothing has worked. I'm excited about getting Freedom's Cry published. Soon now.

Oh what are the numbers? To do with blood pressure or what Valerie? I wonder what the alternative is then to do? Nerves you say in the knees? Yes I thought it was all set for you to have this surgery. Now the battle of the weight is no laughing matter if that is what they need you to do. Well, that is good they are getting a special nurse to help then. Good about the publishing too. I have an appointment today is all but walking in the heat near 100F will not be cool I will bring my trusty umbrella for shade.

That's too hot to walk anywhere in. I'm glad you have an umbrella. I don't know what the numbers are. He said it but I only paid attention to the numbers and that I'm not where I need to be to get the surgery. It is good that I will have help with getting this weight off. Once it comes off I know I'll be able to keep it off. It's getting it off first that's going to be the hard part.

I forget what he called them. 51 is the acceptable number for knee replacement and mine are at 40. Yes, I know my weight is an issue. When I can get the weight down, I'm sure I'll be a candidate for knee replacement. I hope so.

I didn't understand about your number needing to be higher before considering knee surgery. Is that about a health condition other than your knee? I'm happy your book is nearing publication.

I have a friend that has lost seventy pounds since January. I think she is doing a program called Fast Start. I will have to look at her FB profile to know. It has basically meant learning to eat more healthfully and she feels great. Her husband has been able to discontinue a lot of meds as he is also losing weight.

It is called 20/30 Fast Track and I see there are you tube videos. Not sure what it is about altogether, but I have known her for over forty years and she looks great and is doing great.

I'm glad you're not going to miss Art Street, but I know what it's like to live with pain and to struggle with weight. Mine is going down, but not as fast as the doctor wants it to.

I didn't know you had to be a certain weight for knee surgery. I know someone who had it earlier this summer. She is quite heavy.

I don't know if I need to be a certain weight. I don't know if the numbers he mentioned had anything to do with weight. However, he did say I do need to lose weight, and he's going to help by referring me to someone that will help in that regard.

Hmmm... I looked and found little in the way of alternatives to knee replacement surgery, Valerie... I did find an article written by a doctor that suggests some alternative things that could be tried, though. (If you are not interested, please ignore this. I am just trying to help.) IDK if your doctor mentioned any of these things or not, but I did think if he didn't, you should be aware they exist.
Knee replacement surgery is very commonly recommended. You should first exhaust all proven non-surgical alternatives before considering surgery

All good information. I just read the info they gave me. Not enthused. It's called the iovera system. I think I'll lose the weight and then I'll be ready for the surgery.

there is only a tad of bad news there otherwise it sounds like a lot of good solutions await you. And of course your publication. Weight is the main factor on the knees - so help the knees by lowering the load.
