Card Envelopes---Do You Fold Them In or Lick Them Sealed?

Mailing Letters, Mailing Cards, Sealing Envelopes

I'm never sure what to do with my birthday etc. cards before I mail them. My mother used to lick the back down to seal it before she sent it off- even if she hadn't sent anything in the card. In those days, she would even send a small bit of cash to the recipient, but that started to get too risky. I sometimes send a lottery ticket and then for sure I would lick the back down. Some envelopes though, don't stick very well I noticed. However, it you are just sending the card and nothing in it, would you still seal it like my mother used to? In this case I would just tuck it into the envelope and send it off. What say you folks? Remember this is one of the top important questions of the day! LOL!

I always seal my envelopes, just to be sure the card does not slip out.

@Marty1 We have "self sealing" envelopes, we do not need to lick them, we simply raise lower flap and press top flap down to seal.

@Marty1 We had those that needed to be licked years ago, the new ones do not need to be licked, you remove a protective tape and you press, no need to lick.

I always lick them even though I know that is disgusting, but honestly, unless I send it in the mail I just tuck it in. You never know where that glue has been lol

In Australia, if you only send a card with nothing else in it, you should leave the envelop open, so you pay less for a stamp. With me, I use sticky tape to seal the envelop.

Yes, I have done that the odd time too- if it doesn't seem secure. And I worried whether it will still be okay to mail, but it must be.

I lightly wet them to seal them, but never put my tongue on them to seal them.

@MarymargII When that happens to me, I use tape.

Sometimes lately though I find the adhesive part insufficient after wetting it- and it peels back up so often I just tuck it in now.

If I'm sending a card through the post I will always seal it, but if I'm going to actually give it to someone, I don't. Important question answered!

Just giggling at your last line.... but... in the uk, many moons ago... 25 years or more, if you tucked the envelope in.... it went at a cheaper rate... that of a post card... but, if you sealed it...., it went at a letter rate.... but .. I don't know if that still applies these days... I usually seal it...

I have been too but just recently started just tucking it in. No there's no higher price for postage here if you seal it.

I lick them unless it is the adhesive kind. Sometimes add tape to seal tight.

If it's only a card I tuck the flap in but if I send money I seal the envelope.

That's when I for sure would do it but only send a cheque - if at all- since they warn against sending cash! Could go missing---haha!

@MarymargII I shouldn't but I occasionally send money with a card but it's arrived safely so far.

I would think that sending a package, well sealed and insured, with greeting cards inside and even some gift cards or even cash would be more secure than sending a colorful sealed greeting card in an oversized envelope because I don't trust certain types from tearing them open before they get to their destination, that person's mailbox. I also prefer if possible to get the types of envelopes that you don't have to lick, but have peal off self sticking seals.

True and the greeting cards are so flimsy and often the adhesive is not great.
