Books and Computers

Being that I am only five decades old (I would have said half a century but that just sounds old!) I have lived in a world , and still do, with books for research and the computer. I remember being so into the law that whenever I seen a law book at the thrift store I bought it for a dollar or a couple dollars, I would take it home and read it and that would want me to read more about the law, that is when I would go sit for hours at the library and read the law books, you could not check those out but you could read as long as you wanted. Since those days I have won several cases in court and I owe it all to self educating myself, with books. And now to today ........ the computer age. While I still love my books and I still use the library, I can just walk into my home office and type in the words of what I want to learn and BAM! its right there in my face. I am doing a lot of research on how people used to live before manufacturing companies began to mass produce, everything from food to furniture. But at 2 am I am wondering what type of Maple tree do I tap for maple syrup come next Spring, so I can mark them in my woods, And what did I get when I did the search? Twenty two trees to tap for syrup! Most of them growing right here in my woods! While I do love the internet I still ask myself a question, What if there was no more internet? For me? I would survive by reading a real paper book. How about you?

I would go to the library more often for sure. My son bought his first house last year and he has 3 maple trees on this lot and last Spring he went to YouTube and learned how to make maple syrup. He had a ball and wants to do it again. His own granddad has a big sugar bush in Quebec (my Dad)

It is a blessing to have the internet but I do miss the days when there was none. And I mean that. A lot of what I have had to fight on my own, yes I am self taught also through books. Though it is convenient, I feel I do not absorb it as well as if I had read the book. I don't know why that is. That is great Andria..you have all those maples! Looking out for videos now on you making maple syrup.

I still occasionally read paper books, but admit I rely on ebooks a lot more these days. If there was no internet I suppose I would have to readjust to the way things were pre-internet...life wasn't so bad then, actually.

@andriaperry I think younger people would have a harder time adjusting to no internet, since they've always had it. It would be nice if they actually engaged with the world around them instead of sitting around with their nose stuck to some device!

I grew up going to college with books only. My son went to law school and had to use law books, journals, and other paper publications, as well as the internet.

@andriaperry Computers are very important for research and in wring papers and book reports, etc. They start the kids in kindergarten! Computers have benefited so many special education students in so many ways, too. It can make you cry to see autistic, learning disabled, nonverbal, physically handicapped, etc. children learn, read, write, draw, speak, etc. through computer use.

@DianneN Its hard enough to work with mentally disabled adults and the elderly, I know working with the kids would make me cry.

I think that now that we've seen the marvels of internet and become slaves to it, it would be really difficult to live in a world without it.

I would survive with books, too, but I would hate to give up the internet. While there is a lot to be said for researching through books, the internet is faster and with more options. I have always been a reader, so I would read wherever I could find information! (Even billboards and instruction sheets )

I would say that people would be a third resource. People in your circle of friends and expert people like those at a county extension office. Master gardeners, etc.

I'm one of the older people that didn't have electricity in the house in my youth. I remember the days of reading by the fire. We did a lot of story telling and reading books from school on the school bus.

I will still survive of course. Though internet is like a necessity in today's world, we can still survive on things...whatever it is. Internet made our lives easier and faster there's no doubt in that but survival is a matter of choice.

Survival is needing food and water. Not books and the internet.

The internet is very convenient but I always like a book that I can hold in my hand. So if no lawyer is available you can do the job yourself.
