How Does Joey Chestnut Eat 70 Hot Dogs in One Sitting?

Having a hot dog or two this July 4th? How about 70 in 10 minutes? That is what competitive eaters like Joey "Jaws" Chestnut do, train their stomachs to expand 2-3 times their normal size.
A competitive eater like Chestnut, through will power and self discipline, train themselves to eat more and more food. As a result, competitive eaters "can overcome the effects of being full."
Now the bad news, a University of Pennsylvania study on competitive eaters found some potential harmful effects from this type of mass consumption of food. Because the stomach is repeatedly stretched, there is a risk of it tearing. Furthermore, a competive eater will over time lose their ability to feel full leading to obesity after they retire. Finally, the stomach can remain permanently stretched over time, which will not allow it to pass and digest food properly.
This condition, called "gastroparesis", causes nausea and vomiting, due to the stomach muscles "vagus nerve" being unable to function which will leads to compromised digestion.
So, the next time I'm eating a hot dog I'll stick to the old-fashioned time-tested method I've used successfuly for years, one per sitting. DB

I have not seen this guy, but I have seen videos of others in these kinds of eating contests. I remember that Japanese guy who was the hot dog champ at one time. I don't doubt they could end up with stomach issues - who wants that when it's completely avoidable
! I had a hot dog last night for dinner
- um, one.

Yes, the Japanese guy was so small yet he could eat so many hot dogs. I guess size does not matter when it comes to competitive hot dog eating!

@dgobucks226 I've never really understood these types of competitions. Not because I want to be a party pooper but mainly because of what you've said here on what this can do to people's health. And also because it's a waste of food. I just see it as a "Who can make a sick pig of themselves" competition.

Not much I can add to your point of view except I agree. Us crazy Americans love competition of any kind.

I don't think competitive eating is very smart. My biggest fear would be choking honestly.

What one will do to be recognized or attain some sort of celebrity. He ate 72 hot dogs this year (in 10 minutes). Ugh!

I am "shocked" that some food cramming is detrimental to health.
