No Tip For You!

After work this evening I took Tony out to eat, we had planned to eat at western sizzlers, we went in and got our drink order and went to the salad bar bu 4 out of 4 plates were greasy, so we just marched right out of the place. I don`t do nasty plates.
I was hungry o I was headed to KFC they have a little buffet with salad beside chicken but tonight was chicken night but Tony said " how about Golden Coral" off we went , yes its $3.00 more per person but he wanted steak and a bunch of food and I wanted chicken and a salad.
For those who do not have these restaurants you pay as you go in and fix your own drink, seat yourself and serve yourself. BUT they have waitresses, I reckon to refill your drinks.
Well, we both had our salads and I was almost done with my chicken and shrimp, Tony`s full plate of slop and here comes a waitress and asked me if I wanted more water, no it was 3/4 full but Tony could use another diet coke.
Tony was finished with his meal and I was nearly when she finally brought him a drink refill, BUT it was Dr. Pepper! Tony hates DP.
The waitress disappeared again.
When we went out the door she appeared standing with a group of waitresses on the other side of the dining room , when I got into the car we could see the table we sat at, Tony said " Did you see her looking under the plates and all over for a tip?" I did not but I seen her walk back over to the other waitresses.
Did she really expect a tip? They do not need waitresses there they just need people to clean the tables.
Its rare that I walk out with tipping but hey I use to wait tables and I worked for the tip and I got the drink order right.

I usually leave a 10% tip anywhere I eat. But if I feel that I have not been treated well, I see no reason to tip.

@andriaperry No work, no pay. And sometimes it is just a small nice thing that is asked.

I wouldn't have tipped either.
Sometimes, they don't deserve them. If they did their job, itd be different.
Our kfc doesnt have a buffet or salad that i know of.

@andriaperry Happened to me at a gig last night. They got the potatoes with my steak wrong! But it was free, so I didn't bother complaining.

I never tip at Golden Coral. That place is expensive enough as it is. I have always had to wait on drinks or sometimes a table to sit.

@andriaperry Same here. I rarely go to one. As I have to travel an hour or more to get to one.

I don't leave tips for waiters or waitress when eating at a resto that charge service fee. Sounds like a happy meal Andria!

Its optional to leave a tip, if they add it on the bill I will refuse to pay it because I have not received that service yet.

We don't go to GC any longer since it's over an hour from us - but when we ate there we never left more than $2 tip. That's probably more than they deserve since you're right, they don't do much.
We eat at the Western Sizzlin many times but they hand you a salad plate at the register when you pay. There don't have a supply of plates available to pick up. Never was handed a dirty one.

At these they used to be on the corner of the hot bar and salad bar, now they have a cart filled at each end. Desert plates at that bar.

Since her only duty as your waitress was to refill his drink and she didn't get the drink order right (and took forever bringing it,) I think you were justified in not tipping her. I wouldn't have either.

@andriaperry Probably busy on her phone or something. Or slacking with her coworkers. I used to work in the food industry and some of my coworkers were the laziest people I ever met.

Wow, I haven't heard the name Western Sizzler in decades! I didn't know they were still around! I've eaten at Golden Corral before, and I know what you mean about not needing waitresses. I don't understand why they need them to refill your drinks. You already get up to go refill your plate of food, why can't you get your own drink refill too? Seems to me they could lower prices even more by just getting rid of all their waitresses.

@andriaperry I would love to write in and suggest that they do away with the servers, but I don't think it will do any good. I have never seen busboys at Golden Corral before, so I think the waitresses are essentially the busboys in the restaurant. I guess somebody has got to clean the mess leftover when people leave there!

@andriaperry I get it that those in the customer -service/service related industries get a part of their earnings from tips but that doesn't mean that we will tip them even if they gave us bad service/no service at all.

I wouldn't have tipped her either, but my husband would have. He feels guilty if he doesn't even if the help is lousy.

You hear so much about poor service in restaurants today. Why is that? Is it the training provided? Lack of motivation on the part of the staff? If their salary is dependent on tips you would think they would take pride in providing accurate and efficient service. After all, their success depends on it Don't work in that type of industry if your not motivated to do a good job!
