In co-writer/director David M. Evans' 1993 comedy, Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) and his parents (Dennis Leary, Karen Black) move to a new neighborhood. Encouraged by his mom to go out and meet some new friends, Scotty discovers a group of kids playing baseball at a neighborhood sandlot. With only eight players on the team, they welcome Scotty, only there is a problem. Scotty doesn't know how to play baseball.
As the kids teach Scotty, they have to contend with a big dog known as The Beast, who will not allow the guys to retrieve their home run balls. Soon, the team runs out of baseball's, so Scotty brings a ball belonging to his step dad. Problem is, the ball was signed by Babe Ruth. Sure enough, Benny Rodriguez (Mike Vitar,) the team stud, homers, and the gang has to try to get the ball back.
The film gets some great performances from the kids, in particular from Patrick Renna (Ham, the team's catcher.) And James Earl Jones (Mr. Mertle, owner of The Beast) is his usual good self as a blind former Negro League baseball player who actually knew Babe Ruth.
I always fluctuate between this and The Bad News Bears as my favorite baseball movie. Right now, The Sandlot holds that distinction. I love this film.

@mawdest you can usually find it in some of the discount bins. Like I said in my comment, some of this movie was filmed in my hometown. ![](/Content/images/emotes/thumbup.gif)

Love this movie! The Vincent store was filmed in my hometown of Midvale Utah. I remember when they were filming, I had to take a different route to my jr high school they had the roads all blocked off

@teamfreak16 maybe a little, but it was more exciting that a movie was being filmed. No, the the upset and rage started just 3 years later when all of Salt Lake County was at a standstill when I 15 got torn down and redone, closing off most access from east to west.

I'll take Bad News Bears but this is a fun one. There were two sequels.
