Back from my break.

Last week we went to Norway for a short break on a cruise. Norway is particularly pretty because of the fjords. The main reason people cruise here is because of the scenery.
One of the fjords we sailed through was 128 miles long to reach a tiny little village with one shop and nothing else apart from the mountains and fjord which were being fed by the waterfalls that fall down the mountain sides and empty into the fjord.
The mountains are quite high and the fjords are very deep in places. Some of the fjords are 1,300+metres (4000 ft) plus deep whilst surrounded by mountains 1900+ metres ( 4921 ft) plus on either side.
We went up to the tops of the mountains in one of the national parks. There were still pockets of snow at the top although with the sun at the top they were slowly melting and refreezing at night. Surprisingly the sun was quite hot while we were up the mountains but weather can change in an instant.
The drive up into the mountains whilst giving stunning views also gave some quite frightening moments negotiating the hair pin bends on the way up and on the way back down with sheer drops. It would be bad enough in a car but on a bus it was quite hair raising.
Norway is an extremely neat and clean country albeit very expensive. It was light for 22 hours per day and almost like daylight at 1AM. By three Am it was daylight again. Imagine trying to sleep in such light conditions. That was a great point for me being light for so long however in winter it is a total reversal. It is almost night time for 22 hours a day for me that would be torture.
If we had gone further north then the sun would have been in the sky for 24 hours. Oh lordy that would be wonderful.
A few nights we were sitting on the top deck of the ship in almost daylight conditions at around 1AM and when it did get a little dark it was similar to being around 7-9pm back in the UK.
The photo is going up one of the fjords at around 3AM.

22 hours of daylight would make me crazy, I cannot function if I miss the darkness of the night. It's too bad enough to have almost 16 hours of daylight from June 21st, up to the beginning of July. We are losing 3 minutes of daylight per day here in Southern Switzerland, it will be more in 7 days.

@garymarsh6 I hate to wake up in the dark, but I like to go to sleep when it's dark, this is why my favorite months are April and May and from mid-August until the end of September.

@LadyDuck Funnily enough Anna it is the first time that we took an inside cabin so when we turned the lights off it was completely dark otherwise I would have been up all day and all night and only cat napping otherwise.

I love the day time Anna and hate the winter months. In the winter when I am at work I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark and hate it.

I have read so much about Norway and getting it straight from the one who has actually visited that place does make a difference. Sailing through a fjord 126 miles long must have been breathtaking. We had one in New Zealand - Milford sound - and there too there were a couple of waterfalls.

Yes we went on a coach up into the mountains. The views were breathtaking apart from the very bendy roads and straight drops down into the valleys below!

How gorgeous was that, Gary? It is just breathtaking @garymarsh6 . I also could not stand too many hours of darkness and would rather attempt heavy blinds to combat too light conditions.

@bluesa That is good going for me Catherine. When I went transatlantic last November I managed only an hour a night. Eventually a friend of mine gave me a sleeping tablet which knocked me out practically for 24 hours!

We took an inside cabin this time as we thought it would be too cold to sit on the balcony. It was pitch black inside so I managed about 3-4 hours each night! The scenery is amazingly beautiful.,

It is very scenic but very isolated. There are not so many people who live here. OK if you are a loner and prefer your own company but if you are a social animal then you would hate it.

It was brilliant. It was only dark for a very short time before it was light again.
