Bragging is a big turn-off, please shut up!

Yesterday we decided to eat at a local place near the lake. We have eaten there a few times and while it is casual and relaxed, at times a little too relaxed.
The place is owned and operated by a family - Mom, dad and kids all work there. One daughter is the usual 'server'. She is a talker, and sometimes it gets a little annoying as she continues to talk to us as we eat. Yesterday she wasn't there, so we thought we would enjoy our meal without the chatter, wrong!
The mom is the cook and she chatted a while but her chatter was minor. The husband was the problem. He stood about 5 feet from us (we were the only customers) and talked and talked and talked the entire time we were there.
He told us they were from VA and wound up in our area because his wife liked the name of the small town they moved to. He doesn't like the town, said people are too snotty, they talk about themselves too much and he doesn't like when people do that.
How he described himself:
* He was a professional poker player in Atlantic City, won big big money.
* He was an big shot for the railroad and worked there many years.
* He lived all over the world.
* His last home in Virginia had a 7 acre pond.
* He bought a very very expensive boat and only used it one time.
* His father was a professional bass fisherman, and they traveled all the time.
On and on, over and over he told us the same things. We tried to be nice, we smiled and nodded at the appropriate times, but it was not an enjoyable meal at all. Finally we finished eating, paid the bill and left.
This restaurant had been closed since the fall for several reasons and just reopened last weekend. I do hope business picks up so that we can go there and he will have other customers to brag to!

Wow, I wonder if he was lonely or liked to hear himself talk.

@AbbyGreenhill It has to be that. Probably dying for some adult conversation.

Well that would turn me off completely. You go out to eat to enjoy yourself and not listen to the owner chatter on and on about this and that. If you were invited over for a meal then that is a different story. You would expect to have your ear talked off!

He asked us, "what do you do for fun?" and I said, "I think that's rather personal!" I would not go to his house if he was serving prime rib!

@AbbyGreenhill oh that is funny. Poor guy must be quite lonely to ask you personal questions.

@ElusiveButterfly LOL - if he doesn't shut up he is going to be much more loney - as people (including us) will stop going there.

Even if he talked 'normal' it would have been too much talking. I kept quiet and he didn't get the message LOL!

@AbbyGreenhill My husband works with a guy in retail just like you describe. Anytime he helps a customer , he wont stop talking to them. It takes him way longer than it should with the customers.

@LeaPea2417 I wonder how many sales he doesn't make by all his talking. I would leave a store like that I'm sure.

If he would have just talked 'normal' about the weather or something it would not have been too bad.

@AbbyGreenhill LOL, when you brag pretending you have more than you really do, sooner or later you will find someone who lived where you pretended you were rich and famous.

Agreed, bragging about what you have in general is not acceptable, but what did he gain bragging to us? The other funny part - the town where they live is where we sold property, which we bought because we wanted to live near that town LOL

Problem is, we don't have many choices of any close by restaurants that serve things I can eat. I can't eat fried foods - or spicy foods - or pork that leaves out lots of places since this area has a ton of BBQ joints servicing ribs and pulled pork.

That probably would have annoyed me too as I certainly would have liked a little chatter but peace while I ate.

I don't care much for take-out since by the time we would get home it would be cold. At least it was hot while he talked and talked .... and talked.

Oh dear no I would not tolerate that at all.
I would no more let someone stand over me while I am trying to eat than flying in the moon. No matter what they had to say..how annoying.

That is a serious problem, I hate someone lingering at the table while I eat too, serve me, refill drinks and leave me alone. HEY! did you tip him? Ahahahaha.

My husband pays the bills, not sure, but knowing him he did. He wasn't even serving us- his wife took the orders, cooked and served them. She should be angry with him LOL
