Day 320 Proverbs 29:23 Proverbs 29:23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit. You can have pride in your family. You can take pride in your work and achievements. However, when you become arrogant, that kind of pride is unacceptable and will cause problems in your life, primarily no one will want to be around you, they will walk the other way when they see you coming. Solomon said pride would be a person’s downfall. It was better to have a humble spirit than a haughty one. Solomon said, ‘Pride goes before the fall’. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. If you insist on being arrogant about everything you do, placing yourself above everyone, there will come a day when you will tumble and fall off the pedestal of your own making. As Christians, you are warned and told to be humble as Jesus was humble. He did not put forth his own ideas, but his Father’s. He talked about God’s kingdom and told the people what it was like, and what God expected of his people. His whole ministry pointed to his Father. Only when he was directly questioned during the crucifixion about his identity, did he tell them he was the Son of God, the Messiah. Matthew 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knows the Son, but the Father; neither knows any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Matthew 26:63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus said unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Jesus’ proclamation that he was the Son of God, their Messiah was his death sentence. From that moment, the chief priests sought his death, a death that brought eternal life to everyone who accepted the finished work of the cross and his resurrection. How do you become humble? You put others ahead of yourself. You don’t push yourself forward. Isaiah 57:15 For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you. It is possible to be humble. If it weren’t you wouldn’t be told to be humble or given Jesus’ example of a humble spirit. Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (KJV) It’s time to get off the pedestal of your own making before someone knocks you off. Let’s pray: Father, help me put others first, looking to you as my example on how you want me to live and not putting myself and my wants and needs ahead of your plans for my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Copyright © 26 July 2017 by Valerie Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay

We should live our life as per God's wishes and not as per our desires

Yes, amen. Thank you for the message. Another passage I've learned from my daily devotion is Matthew 23:12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Parallel to Luke 14:11

I know someone who used to be proud of himself and always used to boast about himself. This didn't end well for him. We should never flatter ourselves or put others down.

When you are a guest, it is best to take the lower seat and be asked to move up than to ensconce oneself in the higher seat and be asked to move down.
