I was awakened by an earthquake.

Good morning, friends. I´m still half asleep today. I was awakened last night at a little over 3 AM by a strong earthquake. I got up, searched for my slippers and, fortunately, before I went out to the freezing cold, it stopped. I left the outdoor lights on and went back to sleep. But the kind of sleep you have is not the same. So I woke up later and sleepy. Do you live at a place with earthquakes? I searched today and the epicenter had been very near Santiago and 5.4 Richter. Enough to wake up everyone.

I have never experienced an earthquake and I hope I never do. I am sure it's so scary.

@CoralLevang I remember my first earthquakes, when I was very small and jumped down from the 2nd floor, 3 steps at a time, to the arms of my grandmother. I never know now how I did not break a leg then.

YIKES, I'm terrified of earthquakes but so far I have not been anywhere near an area that gets them regularly.

We haven't had an earthquake here since the mid 80's. I think we are due. I remember back in the 80's, when we had our earthquake, I was working with a gal that had really freaked out. She told me she had moved here to get away from the amount of earthquakes they had in California. Poor timing I think.

This earthquake we had last night (5.4 Richter) awoke everyone but it was not enough to cause any trouble. My trouble was that I was not sure is we´d have another one.

it's scary when they happen deep in the night.

We are also between the Nazca and the Sud American faults. Now, lately, they have discovered a small fault just there: the Ramon fault.

Yes, there is a fault line near here. The large 6.4 I think it was earthquake the Eastern US experienced was centered in this county. It was scary, but the aftershocks were scarier!

Aftershocks can be scary too. The worst quake I´ve been near enough so as to be in it was the worst earthquake ever recorded in 1960 (9.5 Richter)

If I were to ask the Seismological Institute I´d see that we have small quakes every single day.

@marguicha Yes, you do. Often they correspond with deep earthquakes that happen in the Fiji region. There is some kind of seismic pressure transfer that goes on between Fiji deep quakes and Chile.

I guess that I´m used to quakes, even strong ones. So that, after my heart stopped pounding, I went back to bed.

That happened to me yesterday, twice. I also noticed your quake on the EQ3D app. I was in a YouTube chatroom of Dutchsinse earthquake monitoring livestream, and several people from Santiago came in the chat and said it was really scary.

The worst was the hour. At night it is worse. Just like the earthquake we had in February 2010. But that was a really big one.
2 Aug 17
Its a terribly experience I guess so,but I live in a country where we don't experience such natural occurrence

@kingspride As the planet goes, it is normal. If you choose to live in a place where there are hurricanes, or floods or earthquakes, it is only Mother nature.

Strong one there. Glad you are well though and safe from what it seems. We have earthquakes here too although no one takes too much notice of them really.
