if the person looks like my age, i don't think that it is unapropriate, but if your asking an old lady, that would be conciderable..

I'm sure most old women would be proud to tell you their age, it's you who regret it because you would be bombarbed with tales.
It's usually the 'middle-aged' that want to run from their ages.

I don't think it is against the rules to ask how old someone is. I don't know why some people are so superfical when it comes to their ages. I mean no matter how good or bad you look your still going to be the same age why be embarasssed because of a number. Your age doesn't define you you define yourself in the what you do and the way you act. I don't care if someone ask me my age I always tell them the truth. of course I'm only 32 I don't know how I will act once I am over 40.lol. So go ahead and ask away.

I think it really only matters with older women. Younger women don't seem to care at all, and neither do men. However, it really seems to bother older women. I am not sure why, but I'd steer clear of asking a women who looks over thirty her age. If she looks younger and is over thirty, well at least you have the back up excuse/compliment that she looks much younger than that. hehe!

May be sometimes its not polite to ask about age as most of the people don't want their age to be known or if you know them very well then you should probably know their age as well, so asking may not be a good option.

Depends on the definition of "just knowing" although in general I see no problem, the offence is a matter of time of the question and the current circumstances and topic of conversation.
Shouting above a crowded room "WHAT'S YOUR AGE" isn't exactly polite.

I think that once a person gets to a certain age it's not polite to ask them.
If they look older than 35, I wouldn't ask them.
I personally wouldn't be offended if someone asked how old I was once I got to be around that age, but some people don't like to talk about how NOT young they are;)

Why Not!!!!!!!!! But for women it even becomes a more critical issue since 'we' find a women's value, in part, in her beauty and beauty belongs to the young. For a woman most of the time its because shes being asked to admit her real age and alot of women dont like that, at least the ones I know, me personally I dont mind. Most guys dont mind answering

it doesnt matter if you were asking about his/her age. All of us wanted to become young as always. Specially the oldies one, they would tell you lie. Expect that as always.
