Yesterday I finally got the DVD "Passengers" from my local library. (By the way, you can usually "rent" movies for free from your local libraries - though there can be a huge wait for the newer movies. But, I digress.)
I was equally impressed and disappointed with it.
There are no spoiler's in this part so you can read safely. Later on there are spoilers - I will mark that clearly.
The story is set in the future - humans are moving to a new plant via space travel. However, the journey takes so long , like 130 years....that all of the crew and passengers are cryogenically frozen, only re-awoken once they are close to the new planet.
One man wakes up early. About 90 years early. For awhile he panics... how to fix the problem , how to get back to sleep, how to reach someone on earth. But after awhile he relaxes and enjoys all that this luxury spacecraft has to offer. For company and comic relief there is the ship's robot, no, android bartender.
And then.... a women gets woken up.....
The entire film is visually stunning, great effect work and highly engaging. However there are big plot holes.
It is a movie I would buy and watch again, however there were some big, glaring errors. The next section will deal with spoilers - so I will conclude here (so that you don't have to read spoilers if you don't want to.) by saying that the visual effects and Jennifer Lawrence's performance are what "make" the movie for me.
****THIS SECTION CONTAINS SPOILERS DO NOT READ ON IF YOU DON"T WANT TO KNOW********
* alright - how did they grow a tree in the middle of the floor on the space craft and how did it later turn into a jungle like garden? There's no sunlight, and where did the soil come from?
* Chris Pratt's character sends a message to earth in the start of the movie. The soonest possible reply is 55 years. Yet at the end of the movie we assume that he, and Jennifer Lawrence's character choose to live out their days on the ship. Wouldn't the message from earth told them how to fix things?
* There are 5,000 passengers on the ship and only 1 "auto physician"?
* The android bartender is the only human looking, human-like functioning , deeply conversational android being on the ship. He's a philosopher type character. There are other droids like the little vacuum cleaners and the waiters, but they are far less capable. You're telling me that a ship with 5,000 passengers would only have one advanced android?
* None of the instructional manuals deal with hibernation pod repair?

I like surprises and so will not read the spoilers at this time. Sounds like an interesting movie. I'll try to find it.

I really liked it (other than what I considered to be plot holes) -- and it is visually beautifully done. I hope you like it. Oh thanks! I was trying to still be considerate of the ending and of one major turn of events in the movie :-)

So do they end up together, happy? Or is like a dire, I guess we're stuck in hell kind of thing. I wanted to see it, but if they don't end up semi happy I don't want to see it after all. You said they decide to live out their days on the ship, and that sounds kind of bad?
If that really happened I'd go nuts. Then I'd pray a hot, non psycho woke up and had a thing for overweight girls.

Lol! Oh... I don't want to spoil it. ... At first - they are happy together. Then - some news comes to light, and they are rather unhappy for a time being ... then they need to work together to solve serious issues so they grow closer again.... Hope that helps. For a day or so it would be alright, but I would go nuts, too... ugh. Oh, I'm already hoping for a hot, non-psycho man who likes overweight girls shows up for me. Here's to both of us finding someone we like whose not entirely psycho:-)

THanks for the review. This movie sounds a little bit like Interstellar. I did not read the spoilers though. I would see it and probably will sometime.

I feel sorry for those two, waking up and it wasn't their time yet. must be nice spending just the two of them all those years.

I watched Passengers a few weeks ago and thought it was a good movie. I loved Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence's performances.
