The Grecian Black dress, traditionally worn by the married and older female generation has made its abundance appearance over the last week - reading about it in "Goat in The Meze" where 'Bald Yannis' has made a killing with sales of this infamous BLACK DRESS on the eve of Marsha's Birthday celebrations. It seems that the ladies of the small village of Astakos would prefer the Sexy young mail order bride should be dressed appropriately - in Traditional Greek Drab.
Then while watching the TV Series 'The Durrells' which is filmed on Corfu, Margo decides to buy her mother the "Greek Black Dress" and Lugaretzia, the Greek help is delighted until they see that Louisa has modified it into a sexy afternoon frock . . . a little too tight apparently as it splits right down the back as she bends to pick up something.
Last night while watching my favourite movie that takes us to the shores of the Greek Island Skopelos, scenes out of 'Mamma Mia' brought forth the traditional drab black dresses when the extra's (all local in their black socks and sandals) gave a terrific rendition of "Dancing Queen" alongside the main actors. Clearly wanting some kind of release from the dreary black scarves, aprons, black dresses and other strange clothing.
So now my question is - Where did this tradition start and why are the Greek Men still so intent on having their woman dressed in these black robes?
In the modern westernized world, the black dress is regarded as the ultimate dress in a ladies closet - the sexy one, but sadly the Grecian one will not do!
Katerina might give us some light on the matter, but if there are any Greek experts out there, you are welcome to give us your five cents as well.
Good Morning to everyone - happy Thursday - my photo is from the Greek Island of Mykonos as the sun started setting.

In Sicily and some southern Italian regions old women still wear black dresses. It's because black thick fabric cannot be transparent. Old southern Italian men, and I think is the same in Greece, want that their wives do not attract unwanted compliments. Anyway, even in Greece, this is something of the past or of small villages only. I have been several times to Athens and women are dressed in a modern fashion, like we dress.

thats what I thought - the woman may not be attractive in case they get compliments. Modern Athens and other places in Greece has western clothing, I was just wondering about the Black dress that Katerina describes in her book - the one Yannis sells in his shop

Now Lany, the dresses in 'Goat In The Meze' are described as hideous, but not black. They come in a variety of very drab colours. Traditionally the old widows wear black dresses (with pop socks). I can't attach a photo to this comment but I will do a post featuring the hideous dresses as sold in the hardware store and who knows, the real life Bald Yannis may get some online orders from it!
