Not sure what what our country would be right now, hadn't the Second World War broken out at the time. Allied Forces had the Dutch Colonist surrender and set Indonesia independent. Tomorrow, August 17, 2017 is Indonesia's Independence Day, when all of the people of Indonesia take part in the celebration.
It has become the tradition to celebrate the Independence Day, though it is not as convivial as before when I was still a kid.
What I can still witness on the celebration are games usually played by kids, while adults participate in climbing an greasy areca palm tree, where on top, varied kinds of gifts (toys, bags, snacks, even a bike) are hung. Those who can reach the top can get them. In reality no one is able to unless all participants work together. The bark of the palm tree is peeled off then some grease is applied on it.
Another interesting games are running or hopping with their legs in a gunny sack. The distance to be covered is about 50 meters. The fastest is the winner.

These are wonderful games and traditions to celebrate independence day. We have music, cookouts, fireworks, swim, and spend time with loved ones for our independence day in July.

That must have been very convivial last July when you celebrated it.
