LIFE WITH A ROBOT?

According to some experts- by the year 2050 , marriage between robots and humans could be legal. Now, I have been writing quite a bit about robots taking over our jobs in the future - but I never considered such a thing as a union between a robot and a human. That is, until this morning when I heard about that possibility on "The World Tomorrow " program. What do you think? Should a human marry a robot ? Can such a thing actually happen in the future? I wonder what that couple could discuss at the breakfast or dinner table.

I reckon you could create the perfect mate. I would most certainly want a mute on a remote control

A marriage with no quarrels or talking back - that's a plus - maybe.

Just as the robot doesn't smoke, ugh, I'm fine with it.

If he does, he might damage a wire or two.

If that's what makes a person live happily ever after, why not? It'd be great too if the robot does everything from work to household chores .

@Kandae11 Just like the tin woodsman in the Wizard of Oz . . . he wanted a heart. True, they can show emotion, but wouldn't really "feel" it.

The only thing missing there would be a heart. Even though they have built robots which can show emotion.

Would divorce still apply for robots?

I was wondering about that. When the powers that be make it legal they'll have to ensure that the robot's rights are not trod on and they receive equal treatment.

@sol_cee Robots can't be real people, but if they are treated like humans then they should have rights too.

I don't think it would be very happy for the human because the robot would know everything.

@Kandae11 It would be something to consider. Now if the robot was like Data who was an android and always seemed to be evolving, it might be interesting - Data is from Star Trek Next Generation.

@Kandae11 Based on the book, The Positronic Man, which was better, in my opinion, than the movie. Though I have to admit, Robin Williams made the movie awesome.

I like to have robots in our lives as they will be very helpful for us without complaints. As to getting married, it will be weird but perhaps finally you will find an ideal spouse who will always listen to you

I have seen a lot about this in the last few years actually Kandase. It could be fine I guess, after all, there are so many divorces, perhaps this would be ideal for some people. I have no doubt at all that in the future it will happen.

No need for a divorce court - just switch it off and store it in a closet.

I have read this morning that scientists are asking NOT to build robots to replace soldiers. I can see how dangerous this can be in case of a new war. Robots instructed to kill would be heartless and kill anyone on their way.

@Kandae11 Yes, I have seen the Robocop and I have also seen "I Robot" where the "good" robots tried to save the humans by the "bad" killer robots and they were also killed.

Why marry and not simply live together? Would a robot understand the idea of immorality? Would the church interfere if you lived together with a robot without a marriage license? Absurd ideas!

That must mean by 2050 they think a robot would be lifelike enough for someone to want to marry it. I would be interested! :-)

@Kandae11 True. It could possibly simulate love and care, but it couldn't truly love you. But that forever young bit could be good, it could take on more and more household duties lol

I imagine that a very small amount of people would wish to marry a robot - and those who go that route would be obviously not interested in having children. And I suppose if they do want children - they could adopt.

Aw, think of all the cute cyborg babies! Someone here at mylot once mentioned a guy who "married" an anime character. Here's an article about it:
Over the last few years, it’s become a trend for truly obsessive anime fans to start referring to their favorite female character as their wife, or waifu, thanks to the Japanese language’s almost complete lack of terminal consonants. Honestly, the whole ph
